I have horrible trouble sleeping

I've been in a quandary.
I've never slept well. As a newborn, I'd awake screaming several time a night. As an adult, I won't be sleepy till 2am or sometimes at dawn. I began taking generic benadryl (diphenhydramine) at bedtime and eventually that didn't work so I had some alcohol with it.
Now I've tried experimenting. A month with no alcohol or benadryl. I was exhausted. Tried a month with benadryl but no alcohol. Tried a month with alcohol, no benadryl. Tried a month with neither of them. After these three months I was nearly psychotic with sleep deprivation. So now I take two benedryl (generic) and one or two drinks.
I don't like the combination. It can't be good. I have acid reflux which I'm sure the alcohol aggravates. My lips feel as if they have metal on them 24/7.
Any ideas? I've tried sleep tactics, breathing strategies, reading, getting up at regular times, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Its 2AM and I am wide awake. I've been awake since midnight. I went to bed a 10pm and something woke me up and now I can't sleep. I have to be at work at 6:30. I am frustrated and so I decided to get on MYLOT for awhile. How are you doing dragon?

I didn't have a real great night, either. Sorry I wasn't at the computer to keep you company! I went to bed at 10 after making myself wake up at 6am and just couldn't get to sleep. I dozed off around 1AM and woke at 3AM and 5:30, got up at 6 with about 4 hours sleep.
I hope your day goes ok. It's awful to have to go to work after a mostly sleepless night! Maybe tonight will be better for you, it usually is after a night of not much sleep.

Terrible. Luckily i'm not in this kind of situation. how about washing an apple and put it beside you pillow on the bed, it is said that the flavor or smell the apple releases can make people feel to go to sleep. also there are some one say u can put potted chrysanthemum in the bedroom. but i haven't tested any of these, probably you can have a try.
you'd better never do other things in the bed, and make it totally a place to sleep, whenever you come to the bed, you'll sleep. you can also try some sports, if u r tied, maybe easy to fall asleep
hope you get out of this bad instance asap.

Thank you for the suggestions! However, I've tried the apple scent and many others. I have plants in my bedroom. It's a relaxing place, very homey. My dogs sleep with me and it's a wonderful little nest complete with books and magazines. No TV!
I'm working on getting a stationery bike for exercise, though I believe I get enough in everyday stuff. Just in case and it can't possibly hurt!
I'm just really frustrated. I hate falling asleep at 4am, getting up at 7am and not able to fall asleep before midnight. I'm TIRED!!!
I've tried diet modification, exercise, all that. I need more sleep and I can't get it. Darn it.

Have you tried to drink herbal tea or maybe even an over the counter sleep aid. Tylenol PM is very good. When I have trouble sleeping, it is usually because of stress. Maybe if you have trouble sleeping and it is affecting you on a daily basis, you should consider getting some help.

Herbal teas have no effect on me. Too bad, that would be a wonderful solution. I'm stressed, as you suggest, but can't do much about it. Maybe I should learn to deal with it.
Thanks for the suggestions, though.
