I remember watching a YouTube video where Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck suddenly chipped in when JP was doing Stairway to Heaven on instrumental. They were no comparison to JP. Anybody agree ?

i do not consider anyone to be the greatest. i do not like to play favorites because each has its own style.jimmy page, eric clapton, jeff beck, joe satriani, john mclaughlin, paco de lucia and the others they all made me feel so good.

I am afraid i tend to agree with you. Are you a guitarist, by the way. I do listen to any guitarist i can have my ears on. And yes at times, we prefer different sort of music at different time. Thanks for your honest view points.

i have lots of musician friends and there is one friend who plays the guitar so well! he can play the guitar laid on his lap and taps and holds the fret top side playing the betles blackbird and everytime he plays the same tune all over again on a different day , he plays it in a different way, in a different style.so progressive and when you listen to him play, as if there was 3 guys playing the guitar! there are a lot of unknowns who are so good in what they do, maybe, yo uare one of them gifted ones!

At the risk of being controversial. jimmy Page's work does nothing for me. Never has. I like the solo in Whole Lotta Love but otherwise he leaves me cold. I know he can play, but he doesn't grab me. Sorry

For me there is no one single greatest guitarist, but thats all opinion. Jimmy Page is one of my favorite guitarists of all time but I wouldn't consider him the greatest. As good as Zeppelin is a lot of their stuff was a bit overrated as far as guitarwork went, including Stairway to Heaven. What made Page great was the work he could do with improvising but he isn't who I'd consider the greatest.
