chocolate labs are more suceptible to being mentally challenged and thus are picked less often. I have a chocolate lab who is mentally challenged but I love him just as much as my yellow lab. They are both loving and loyal. I used to have a black lab too. The yellow is my favorite so far (he is still a puppy) because he is so much more intelligent than the other two. he learns so quickly and is so eager to please! I love them all very much though!

Good point, they can also be much harder to keep from digging because of this fact. I had one dig THROUGH a wall to get outside once. Yellows are much calmer and easier to train.

Definitely, the older my yellow lab gets (he is almost a year now) the easier he is to train and the more obedient he is.

It is usually because chocolate labs do not breed true (two chocolate labs can end up with all black & yellow pups instead of chocolate pups). Because of this they are rarer and usually priced higher than the black and yellow ones. A lot of people also believe the labs abilities are determined by their color, although they are not. American labs are usually better at being trained as hunting dogs, but are extremely hyperactive as pups (the first 3 years) and can make poor house pets, while the English labs make great house pets, but are not as keen on hunting.

Opps - hit the button b4 I answered your question. I have a black and a yellow and love them both. I wish I had a chocolate, but 2 large dogs are enough for me right now - LOL!
