What are you allergic to?

Spring is here finally in south western Ontario, and I'm finding that although I'm just getting rid of a cold, I'm still blowing my nose more than I should be. I have to assume I have allergies, although I've never been tested for anything. Thank goodness I can buy my boxes of facial tissue for less than $1... usually I stock up when they're on sale every other week, and only 49 to 69 cents per box.
One of the strange allergic reactions I have discovered in recent months, is to vanilla scented "fleecy" dryer sheets. I used to be fine with them, and used them all of the time for my clothing and linens. I don't even use a full sheet when I'm putting loads in the dryer; I rip it in half. But that doesn't matter with these ones anymore, they make my face break out like you wouldn't believe! And I rediscovered that this weekend, after not using them for over 3 months. It's not "fleecy" itself that is the issue, because I have been using the original scented dryer sheets all along, and don't have any reaction from them. But the vanilla scented ones I cannot use on my stuff anymore. It's odd to me, because I don't really have sensitive skin. My sons don't seem to have any reaction to them, so I'm using up the rest of the sheets on their laundry loads.
Do you have any allergies? What are you allergic to? Have you ever been tested for specific allergies? What do you do to combat your allergies? Do you have an allergic reaction to certain products (like me and my fleecy vanilla dryer sheets)? Do you get your facial tissues at a reasonable cost?

I am allergic to latex, caterpillars, certain pollens, and black flys. I may be allergic to more things, but those are the ones that I am aware of. My husband wanted to me go get an allergy test done.....well screw that.....allergy tests cosist of them scratching or cutting you a bunch of times and then rubbing crap in the cuts to see if your allergic to it. To hell with that.

Yeah wierd but true. When I was young I loved caterpillars, I thought they were so cute, and summer I would get rashes all over me and they couldn't figure out fo the longest time what was wrong with me. Eventually the doctor figured out somehow that I was allergic to the stuff on the feet of caterpillars, so when I caught on, anywhere that i let it walk on me, and anywhere that I touched myself after having it in my hand, I would get a rash.

For deadly allergies, that testing method is more preferred than finding out by having full exposure to the cause, I'm sure. lol. Caterpillars? Wow! I've never heard of that one.

The only thing I am allergic to is wool. Both of my kids are allergic to penicillian and my daughter has allergies to outdoor smells that cause her to have sinus infections luckily she is not allergic to our kitties.

Ouch on the sinus infections! I have had a few of them, and they are not easy to get rid of.

I do know how that goes with being allergic to certain scents and how one thing from a company doesn't bother but another one does. I'm allergic to a lot of things actually but many of them have one or two things in common, mainly iodine or sulfa. Many laundry soaps, body soaps and shampoos I can't use due to having too much sulfates in them. Same with many medications, they have some form of sulfa or iodine in them. Now I'm also allergic to roses, gardenias, and jasmine. These three scents, one or all, are used as the base for many perfumes and scents in other products. It really makes life interesting.
I'm also allergic to bees, wasps and ants. Not to mention rabbit fur (my niece has a pet rabbit and I have to keep clear of him) and feathers. I can't be around anything with feathers, this includes birds as well as pillows or quilts. Let's not forget citrus trees which we have tons about here in Florida. Along with mold and mildew. So yes allergies are so much fun for me. I keep benadryl on hand at all times.

Well I have to look at the ingredients and most shampoos have 2 different sulfates listed. If they are together in the list I can't use them but if they are separated by other items i can. I have found few that only have one. The hard part is many laundry soaps don't list the ingredients so it's trial and error.

Other than the unfortunate reaction with the vanilla laundry sheets, I don't have any issues with scented anything. I can't imagine having to deal with that with all of my lotions, soaps, and shampoos. Yikes!

It's interesting you started this discussion as I was thinking about this. There are more and more people with allergies. Allergies that they didn't even have for many years.
Compared to other countries, north america seems to have a huge share of allergy cases. I just don't know why - some theories maybe but nothing special .
I was never allergic to anything.
I found out a few years back that I am extremely allergic to metal. Funny thing, because when I was a teen I used to wear all kinds of rings and necklaces and bracelets. SOmetimes we would make them out of wire and other strange things like that. Never an allergy !
Now I can't wear jewelry unless it's 18k gold or higher. HEck I can't even wear a watch or my wrists will look like I had a close encounter with poison ivy!
Sinus allergies... never had that either. Yes, I was always close to the ocean. I don't really know if there is any scientific proof for this but it is said back home that the salt really helps with your sinus and the fact is that cleaning nose drops are basically just salt and water, so there might be something to it.
IN any case a few years after I came here... bam! Sinus allergy.
About 12 years ago I suddenly woke up feeling my mouth and throat swelling.Smart girl I am I took antihistamine right away and ran to the doctor.
Came out with an epi-pen, appointments for the immunologist and a bunch of hives in my body.
Doctors were never able to figure out what I was reacting to. But if I didn't take the antihistamine at the same time every day I would break out with hives and if I still didn't take it my mouth would start swelling again.
For a full year I went from specialist to specialist, no answers, and being told that it would go away maybe in a week, a month, a year, 10 years or never!!!!!
I was afraid of touching things, eating, laundry detergent, perfumes, make up, anything.. you name it , I would be afraid of it. Just because I didn't know what was causing it.
If you're allergic to peanuts, you know that you stay away from them and you will be fine.
If you are allergic to insect stings, you protect yourself and you will probably be fine too.
But when you don't know... well it's kind of scary.
The fun thing is, after one year of taking antihistamine every single day, I went back home with my kids.
WE stayed with my mom at the beach.AFter a week, something happened - I think we went out for dinner or something - and I forgot to take the medication. Normally I would start getting hives right away so I would remember immediately to take it. But that time I only remembered when I got home, which was at least 4 hours after I should have taken the medication and when I started getting just one or two hives.
I took it then but a few days after I forgot again. This time I only remembered the next day.
SO slowly I started taking less antihistamine. I would skip one day. NO hives... good. THen skipp two days.. until I wasn't taking it at all
I came back and haven't had it ever again! Curious huh?

What an ordeal you went through! Wow! You're right in that not knowing is the worst thing. I'm so glad you were able to wean yourself off of the allergy medication. Hopefully whatever that reaction was to was just a phase, and you won't have to go through it again.

I'm allergic to dust. I would sneeze a lot and have red eyes.
For food I am allergic to shrimp, crabs and lobsters. I get an itchy mouth and an asthma attack. It's okay because I don't like such foods anyway.

Shellfish can be an acquired taste, I can go without it myself. However, I'm fortunate that I don't have an allergy to it.

according to my allergist i am allergic to all the trees and all the grasses we have here in NJ. with that said, i really only experience very very mild symptoms of allergies so i do nothing to treat it. i am, however, very allergic to cats so i need to be careful around them especially indoors.

I guess your body has built up somewhat of an immunity to the trees and grasses in your area, because of such regular exposure to them all.

I moved into a house once that was infested with fleas. It was awful! They adored me and the tops of my feet. It was painful, and I still have scars from scratching.

The only thing I could remember I got allergic into was, those dusts. I think I was lacking in vitamin C those times, I end up always sneezing after cleaning or accidentally inhaling dusts (house dusts). I never have any allergic reactions on anything aside from that, so I decided to take up more fruits and supplements to avoid having allergic reactions..

I have friends who are allergic to cat fur, and when they know they'll be visiting somewhere that has a cat, they take an allergy pill ahead of time, and it helps them a lot.

I also have a runny nose, although I've had it for the last few years. It's there rain or shine, summer or winter, the only difference being early in the morning or late at night - whenever I'm tired, it usually get's worse. I haven't been able to figure out what it is, because it doesn't change with season, or the country I'm in, or anything. (And I hate blood tests... :( ) I've gone to alternative medical doctors and tried wierd diets and homeopathic remedies all to no avail... I also have had dry skin, lips and hair for a while and think it's associated - but I just can't figure out why. Lately I've been using a subscription nose spray from a real doctor and that seems to help a little although it never completely gets rid of it. The amount of tissues I use in a week is just crazy! Thank goodness I still live at home and can live off my parents. :)
Otherwise, I have never been allergic to anything thank God - no food has limited my life!

That must be awful having to go through a constant drippy nose. Ugh! I'm like that all winter long, but seem to get some reprieve in the spring and summer.

Where do I start. I am an asthmatic and over the years have proved positive to: House dust, feathers, cereals, pollens, paint, grass, rain (!), exhaust fumes, methylated spirits, cats (but not dogs), guinea pigs (long haired). Can't remember anything else. But these days it is mostly dust and feathers. I used to go the hospital regularly but I cannot even remember the last time I went. I am now so mild that I only get a major attack every 3/4 years or so. Frightening when it happens though.

Oh my P1ke! That's awful! But it's a good thing that it's all calmed down. I can't imagine the fear involved in having a reaction so bad that it would require a trip to the hospital. Eek!
By the way, I LOVE your new avatar.

I'm allergic to certain pollens (hayfever) since I was about 11 and I'm also allergic to the sun and have been since i was a tot...to the point that back then I had to wear full length pants and shirts even in the summertime which in southern ontario could and still can get hot..it sucked when I was a kid....Now I deal with it (though I do push it with the whole tanning thing and whatnot..I've actually made myself extremely sick in the past)..I'm also allergic to Strawberries which sucks too since I love them..I can have 2 or 3 max and be ok but anymore than that and I get sick so things like strawberry jam for example is out of the question...

Oh and for treatment it depends on the severity and which allergy..for my hayfever I just take a 24 hour allergy med which for the most part does the trick...With the strawberries I have to just avoid them and only treat myself to the very occasional 2 or 3 and with the sun I am only suppose to be out in direct sun for very short bouts of time like 10 mins then I have to go into the shade..I also need to REALLY down the water too...and if the hives come I have to take an antihistamine....The sun can be a tricky one to deal with at times partly cause my reaction isnt always severe and partly cause I'm a WICKED DIEHARD for summer LOL...

I have a 1/2 brother who is allergic to the sun. He has to wear a specific brand of sunscreen (spf 45... apparently anything higher than that is b.s. according to him lol). I can't imagine having to live with such a thing. I burn easily, but I can't stay out of the sun either.... the intensity of the attraction is too deep. lol.

I have a very long list of allergies and when my friends read it they are going to wonder why I don't change occupations. I'm allergic to growing plants and when my fish tank plants and ponds are growing, then I'm on allergy medication.
Other items coconut found out the worst way became so ill ended up in the hospital, any kind of nut and get sick just smelling peanuts, mayo, dairy products, dust, scented items like perfume, dryer sheets, detergent, and shampoos. I have to avoid cats because of the dander in the hair.
I sell pond plants as part of my living and learned from an early age that medication can keep my allergies under control. I was tested as a child when sneezing and hives were a problem living on a farm. We grew hay for the farm animals and my parents had me see allergy specialists to be able to live a better life.
Tissues are $1.00 a box, so I stock up when there is a good sale.

I found out the hard way once that I am deathly allergic to mangos. I was happily munching away on one and suddenly couldn't breathe. They had to take me to the ER! That isn't as bad as another friend of mine that is allergic to chocolate. Now that would be horrible. LOL
As to blooming things:
I am set off by flowers sadly.
I love them, but they make me sneeze and wheeze. No fun.

I did have a cat a few years ago in my cramped, little apartment. It was then that a noticed some symptons that I hadn't noticed when I had cats growing up on a farm. He was a cute kitty, but man was he hyper and he liked to bite! Not that it hurt, but when I tried to pet him, he'd open his mouth.

I've never had an allergic reaction in my life until I used Fleecy Vanilla Dryer sheets. I've always used Bounce, but the Fleecy ones sounded so good and smelled so nice when I opened the box. I washed some of my clothes, underwear, my nightie and mattress cover and threw a Fleecy sheet into the dryer. One night in that nightie and with that mattress cover and I spent 5 days covered in hives, had swollen lips and my MD had to put me on Prednisone and Reactine.

I didn't break out as badly as you did, but it was still awful having to go through that. Since starting this thread a few months ago, I have used the vanilla dryer sheets by Fleecy a few times, and knock on wood, no reaction. But to play it safe, I still won't buy any more once these ones run out.
