What causes ear mites? And is there an over the counter med for them or do I need to take my puppy to the vet?

Most over the counter medications are a waste of money. Their ingrediance are usually not strong enough to kill all of the ear mites. Leaving you with a reoccuring problem on your hands. Most veternarians sell Revolution. It is a topical spot on that you apply by parting the hair on you puppies shoulders and applying the entire tube. It is based on the puppies body weight. You should apply one, then repeat it again in 2 weeks, then again in 4 weeks. Following those guidelines will best kill all of the ear mites. Also you should just take your pup to the vet for a full check up and vaccinations if you havn't aready. A puppy needs more that just 1 puppy booster vaccine to protect it. Or you may have more than just ear mites on you hands....he may contract a number of different viruses....like the Parvo virus which can kill an unvaccinated puppy with out medical treatment. Good luck.

Thank you so much for replying. Great answers. My uncle just lost two puppies to Parvo. It is a terrible thing for them to get.

I am not sure what causes them they are very common about 50% of dogs and cats get them. Before you put any medicine in their ears you need to clean them out and get every little bit of black stuff out of the ear or it could reoccur. Taking your puppy to the vet would be the best way to make sure you get rid of them completely as they will clean out the ear thourougly and give you a prescirption medicine.

I do not know what causes ear mites but they do sell solution at every store that is over-the-counter. You just put in a few drops in both ears and the mites are killed. I get mine at the local dollar store.

Oh ok. I replied to the reponse below first and was fixing to call the vet, but I think I may try over the counter first. Thank you for replying.
