After only two months I'm already upset with my job

As you all know, I began working at Dillards two months ago and after a month's time was assigned to the shoe department. I loved it initially, but things have taken a turn and its not for the good. First of all, because the shoe department is commission based its quite cutthroat. The commission people earn is often their livelihood and so people can be quite nasty in making their sales. After being their just going on a month I have already reached number one in sales for the department. Needless to say, that doesn't sit well with the other employees and the green eyed monster has raised its head. According to the manager there have been many complaints about me, when all I'm doing is what I'm supposed to be doing, not sitting on my butt, not texting on my phone all day, but rather soliciting sales. To top that off, yesterday I had a co-worker speak quite nastily to me, so I told him in no uncertain terms that I wouldn't tolerate being talked to in that manner and when I reported it to my manager thats when he told me that there seemed to be an ongoing problem regarding people complaining about me. He also went on to say that in the last month there has been money missing from the register twice. I am not a thief. Number one, I'm not that stupid and number two I have better ethics than that. Yet, here I am the new kid on the block and I feel like I'm being scrutinized because of it. It makes me uneasy to say the least. He said an investigation is being done which I welcome, but in the meantime I feel very uncomfortable at my job and wonder what advice my friends here at mylot would give me as to how to handle this awkward situation.

Sounds to me like the lazy people you work with are jealous because, you are making sales and they are not. Also is the customers complaining or the people you work with? If sales are up seems like maybe your boss needs to take a look at his other employees. I would hold my head up and keep on trucking along and bring the customers in. Don't worry about what other people think, they don't walk in your shoes.

No, the customers aren't complaining, the other employees are. I think they are complaining that I'm taking their sales, but I am fair and I know I am.

Jealousy in the workplace is horrible hun. My partner works in a call centre and because he does actually care about people and wants to help them he has been the subject of a lot of jibes and critisism. He has kept his head down and got on with his job, tried to ignore all the unpleasantness going on there. It isn't easy to do, but you know you are not the bad guy here, try and stick it out as long as you can, hopefully they will find someone else to pick on.

Apparently we have some other new people coming into the department, so maybe the dynamics will change for the better.

Katherine sweety I am so sorry to hear about this! I know it cannot be easy but it seems to me as though people are jealous that you are new and that you are doing better at sales! It can be quite upsetting if you are settled in a way of doing a job and someone new comes along and shows you up! I also know what it is like to be accused of stealing at work - many, many years ago when I was at school and my first year of college I worked in a supermarket and peoples lockers were being stolen from, one of them was mine and I lost a whole weeks wages myself but when they were looking into it it turned out I was the only person who had been working every time something was taken! I was very upset as I knew I hadn't done it but had no way to prove it, I left the job under a cloud and felt very depressed and humiliated! It was discovered about 2 months later (after the thefts continued) that it had been 2 people who were stealing but I never got told officially that suspicion had lifted from me or an apology! I hope that this investigation clears things up for you and that things settle down and let you enjoy your job in peace! xxx

Nice to hear from you. Where have you been? Anyway, as long as I know I haven't done anything wrong, then I really shouldn't let it bother me. I'm sorry that it happened to you and caused you to leave the company you worked for.

I think it is ridiculous that you are not being respected because of your GOOD work ethics!
You should complain to your manager and let them know! Hopefully they will be understanding.
Also, try and be civil, because you would want a clean slate. If you're making money, and you're doing well, then that is brilliant! Do everything you can to try keep your job, I'd say, even if it means putting up with some stupid people. Hopefully they will tire of being spiteful soon. Or even better, somebody new will be hired who you can make friends with! =]

I just went into work today with a determined attitude to do the right thing. I was friendly to my co-worker and even bit the bullet and apologized for the words we had yesterday. I went out of my way to ask his advice and converse with him. I think it made things a bit easier for today.

That is really a horrible place to be in, it is the last thing that you need when you spend all day with these people. It sounds like you are making them feel very insecure in themselves for them to turn on you like this, that plus a touch of jealousy too. I guess that the only thing you can do is stick it out and just keep doing what you are doing, as to the thieving the bosses have to have proof positive that it was you that was doing it, they cannot just fire you on hearsay and I expect that other members of staff could be pointing the finger in your direction with you being new. Lets just hope that the investigations blows all of the bugs out of the woodwork, just you keep your chin up and do not let them chase you out!!

I think my manager knows more than what he is letting on. Today he was very supportive of me. He called me in first thing this morning and we talked about the whole thing. He told me I was doing a terrific job, my numbers were excellent and not to worry about it. He really went out of his way to make me feel better.

Jealousy is the worse thing at work when you are doing better then others
Now let the Investigations go on but 1. The Manager had no right to say that to you as it sounds like accusing you 2. He should ask why there are complaints when it plainly shows you are good at the job, it is obvious it is jealousy 3. He should be calling a meeting from that Department to sort things out and get to the bottom of it
I have had this Problem to deal with as a Manager and it always boiled down to Jealousy and if your Manager had a right sense to see this then he would act instead of picking on the new Girl
Also if he got to know his Staff he would know what is going on
I had 40 Contracts that I looked after (I loved the Motorways lol) I had 85 Staff working for me and I knew my Staff and I knew what they where about so it was always easy to solve Problems like that
Do not leave as then he would think it was you as it sounds someone is trying to set you up
So please Sweetie watch your Back
Make sure no one can get to your locker, bag anything where they could slip the Money in to put the Blame on you
I hope this gets sorted soon I know what it is like to work somewhere with that kind of Strain

it happen to me also in my previos work, but still i give them my best for the job till i reach 2 yeras in the job they give me an award for best employee of the month, i was working in hotel before, since that lot of pressure specially in front desk, but i just make my self calm, even do i want to shout in the front of everyo ne because i feel also what you fee, dont even think about it & just remomend to the boss of the company to make a complain paper so they can prove what the customer say to each stop, because they do also that complain or suggestion for each guest in the hotel & include who is the best staff in the company. i hope it will work.

okay.. so that seems soo clear to me that your workmates are jealous of your success... seems like your manager too is feeling threatened by the amount of sales you are able to bring the company - of course a threat to someone who does not seemed to be working as much as the others.
if you love your work, then try to endure and not mind all these people trying to pull you down, sometimes co workers are just like that, they dont seemed to be happy with the success of others.
But you really have to be careful, remember your manager can actually make you look like the bad person in here. she/he might be able to get you kicked out of the work place. you have to make sure they don't do that to you by keeping yourself safe and not to give them anything to put you up against with... like the money supposedly missing.. he was like telling "you got" the money.
Just be careful, my friend.

Well after thinking about it , I thought, I'll just go in and do my job and the others can do as they like. As for the missing money, I know I am in no way involved and since they have cameras on the registers surely they must have some idea who it might be. There is absolutely nothing to indicate it would be me.

i think there is all these hazards associated in each job. i can't say that i am very much happy and problem less in my job. i think you should take your boss in confidence and tell him what is the case actually. try to look for a better one.

I was once new on the job and found myself being accused of stealing and overchargeing people. I ended up being off for a week, unpaid while they tried to find out what was happening. It was someone else at the store but it didn't make me feel any better about it. It burnt me for the job and I've never cared anything about since. I'm looking for other work.

I'm sorry to hear that you can identify with what I'm trying to say. I don't like being under scrutiny just because I'm new. Its making me very uncomfortable which I'm sure you can fully understand.

As difficult as it may be, I know you don't want to quit. Keep your head up and keep doing the good job you have been. Don't let other employees jealousy get you down. People who act like that usually don't last long in their jobs anyway. You'll probably be there making sales long after they have moved on.

HI Kb. If I was in your shoes I would tell the manager eactly what you have told us. You are feeling uncomfortable even though your working your butt off and the stats and your lead in sales is there to prove it. Others are being nasty to you and as a "new kid on the block" you are starting to feel awkward.
It should be his duty to look rationally into the situation by doing random checks to see how you operate and what takes place in the department. I would ask that he do random checks on me to show that I was open at what I do. I would also do my best not to interac with the others as much as is possible as they may be gunning for you and will use the slightest things you say or do to make trouble.
Well thats what I think I would do but whatever your choice I say all the best and keep up the good work attitude. Your there to earn not necessarily make friends.

Sad to hear that my friend. I know how you feel and I believe in you, you are just doing what is right. You know, when you excel on something, people normally feel bad about it, thats envy. I really dont know why there are people like that in every workplace. They are not happy when somebody is doing well, because they want to be the best and even would create trouble for you. I hope you could get away with this. No worries for the investigation for you know yourself very well.
Good luck and God bless!

Thank you for your support. Yes, I know I'm not in the wrong here, but nevertheless its very disheartening and disconcerting. Its hard to motivate myself to go to work, but I have to.

Wow!! Sounds like this is not a Great place for you to be working at all. I am not sure if I would want to stay somewhere where I was treated like that either. Sounds like someone is trying to set you up for Failure. I worked somewhere once a little over 2 yrs. ago, and went thru a lot of those same issues, and was even let go. It was my word against theirs.
Can you get your old job back? Maybe this would be something I would be considering if I were you. Wishing you the Best, and keep us updated. If you are a Prayer believing person, a little Prayer may not hurt as well.

check with the government to see what your rights are. Don't leave yourself wide open for them. Here in Quebec we have the wage and norms commission that we find out what is legal and what is not in the work place. Check also if there are lobby groups in your area for workplace conditions. File a compliant with head office, for harrassement and unfair treatment, you really have nothing to lose you have only worked there a month.

I am proud of you for sticking up for yourself with that awful coworker. Be assured that the real thief will be caught, if there really is one. Jealousy is a horrible emotion to experience from either end. Stand firm in your assertions that you have done nothing wrong. Continue the wonderful work and know you will be rewarded.

I wonder why they are ganging up on you that much. That is not nice of them. Why are they that jealous of your sales. If you are not doing anything wrong and they are treating you that way maybe you should find a new job. It is not healthy to work in a place where everybody hates you. If you still want to stay there when you get a sale just don't boast about it or tell the others you got a sale. Let them know without you informing them or telling them about it. Avoid being left alone near the cashier so they won't suspect you of anything and tell your boss to purchase a camera so he can record every moves everyone does in his office. Good luck to you I do hope this get settled real soon. Take care..

I know just how you feel. I went through something very similar to what you are going through now a couple of months ago. Actually it had been brewing for several months. I decided to get out of the situation. Stand up to what you believe is right.
