My husband and son went fishing day before yesterday and came home with 6 large catfish. The biggest one was a 6 pounder caught by my 12 year old son. He was so elated about catching that big fish that he couldn't stop talking about it. Of course we got some pictures of him proudly holding up his catch. We got a good freezer full of catfish fillets, too.

Sounds like your 6yr old will be hooked on fishing.

I got hooked on fishing when I was about that age and at 55 I'm still a kid at heart when it comes to fishing. I liked fishing rivers and streams so much I invented something to make it easier and more fun. I don't mean to spam your blog but the BulletBobber is a pretty neat invention. I have never really got into catfishing because I like more aggresive game fish and the fact that catfish are bottom feeders scares me when it comes to eating fish unless they are from a clean watershed.

In the process of becoming a good fisherman I hope that your son becomes a conservationist too. That way he and others will be able to fish for the big ones in many years to come. Help him to understand that it takes a little putting back to be able to take. Even the act of cleaning up before you leave will be a help . Again congrats to your son.

He has my husband for an example, who is very conscientious about taking care of his favorite fishing spots. Mostly they catch the fish and then release them again, but they got enough of the big cats to filet them and make some good meals. If they only catch one or two big fish they always release them because it won't be enough to cook for our family.
