Can I still be corrected?

I have never been to a typing school or no one has ever taught me to type. I learned to type myself and I know Im fairly fast having taken some online typing skills test.
I have read in a discussion before that the thumb should be used in pressing the spacebar. Since then, I have observed myself and found that I use the pointing finger of my right hand to do so. I still want to learn how to type right as I saw my colleague before typing without looking and fast.
Can this still be corrected? How do you think can this habit of mine be corrected? As they say... you cant teach old dogs new tricks but I dont agree with that. Any suggestions or comments, I highly appreciate and thanks in advance!

I can type very fast and not looking at the keyboard. This is because I went to a typing school. Learning by yourself is not easy. You need to know which fingers to hit which letter and yes the thumb is mainly for the space bar. And yes, you can still learn how to type the correct way. May be you should buy a typing book and start learning from the beginning if you want to type without looking. You can pick up typing speed if you type everyday. And with mylot, it shouldn't be any problems.

I envy those people who can type very fast without looking at the keyboard with little typo error. And yes I know that typing class could really help a lot but I was unfortunate to do that and it was not incorporated in our school. But thank you as I will try to learn the right way. I type fairly fast than others and can even type without looking at times so I guess just a little honing.

It doesn't really matter if you use your fingers or your thumb. As long as you are doing it, and well I might add, no typo errors here, then it is okay to use whatever you want and whatever you are comfortable with. I use my thumbs but until I read this discussion, I never noticed before. I do sometimes use my right hand pointing finger, like at the end of my sentence and I want to start another sentence, I found just now that I used my finger. So you don't need to learn to use your thumbs.

My bf also types without looking at the keyboard and doing any mistakes but he never took any programs. I can do the same but not as accurate as him. I don't know if you have alot of online friends. You can go on msn or yahoo and chat with them online. I think it's a good way to practice. Since I was in high school, I was slow to the keyboard, but ever since I had msn, I talk to them every night so it makes alot of practice.

i also taught myself how to type, at first i was very slow and trying to find each letter, but gradually i pick up my speed. I suppose that comes with your practice, if i have not typed in a long time then i seem to slow down though, and i can type faster when i type in my own words, meanwhile i type slower if i have to type someone else's.
But i suppose it is up to you if you want to use your thumb to press the space key or not, anyway you have typed out what you wanted to say in the pose isnt it? Whatever comes more natural, use it. Who cares? I mean, i never use the conventional method but i can type between 50-60 wpm and i am happy with it. So must you

I use my thumb to hit the spacebar. I took typing in high school and then went on to college for computers so I can type pretty fast without looking at the keyboard. There are some places online you can go to help you learn to type without looking at the keys. Maybe if you took the lessons then it would help you to learn to hit the spacebar with your thumb instead of your pointer finger.

I also use my forefinger for the spacebar. I am not sure if you would be able to teach yourself to "touch" type after having taught yourself to look at the keys. When I learned to "touch" type it was in school and some of the typewriters had blank keys and others had a shield over the keyboard so you could not see it. When I lived and worked in Germany the keyboard was different from an English language keyboard! So I could not not touch type any more and had to look at the keys. After 8 years of using a German language typewriter my touch typing suffered and now I still look at the keys.

I have a link to my son's middle school website that has a lot of typing resources on it. It is used by students to help them in their typing skills. I am sure you could find something there. Here is the link. Good Luck. I hope this links will help you out.

I personally don't feel that it's so important how you arrive at your destination, gabrielle, only that you do ! I don't always use the "correct" method on the keyboard, but I manage to get the job done in an efficient manner anyway. Unless it's really bothering you, you should not worry about it.

i always look at the keyboard when i type because i dont know how to type using
my ten fingers. i can type fast though like 35 to 40 per minute with 98 percent
accuracy. Although this only applies when the things that i need to type is
being dictated to me or when im chatting or answering discussion on mylot.
If I need to look at any paper to type it in on the computer then my typing
speed s*cks...it'll be 20 to 25 word per minute hehehe.

Well, you can practice it slowly, and as you get used to the new typing method, you would be able to change / correct your way of pressing the keyboard.
I even know some grown ups that started learning piano lesson a bit late. Usually people said that kids would play piano better because they started learning at early age, but I don’t think that they were 100% correct. I think the self determined in practicing that would help us. :)

Just because people you work with type fast, that doesn't mean you have to do the same thing... What's the points of typing fast any way. Just type like every body does. Unless your job require you to type fast. Don't be obsess with typing fast...

just keep practicing doing it the right way and eventually you will break the old habit. When you come to make the the spacebar say in your mind, space must you thumb until it comes to a point that it is second nature to you.

Well, in the end I think that what works the best for you is the correct way, isn't it ?
Technically the thumbs seem to be the most logical solution for the space bar because they're just right there, no need for any special finger gymnastics to get another finger to press the space bar but if it feels more comfortable for you to use another finger then by all means use it.

It doesn't matter if you have poor typing skills.Ever since my right half of the body got paralyzed,I had to do the typing with just one hand.Don't fret. You'll get it perfect soon.

Hi Gab,
I actually taught myself typing...
my cousin had actually gone for typing class, and she had this book / manual..
i learnt typing from 'borrowing' her book.
basically - it's the 'finger placement' on the keyboard... all keyboard are universal / same.. so once you've memorised where 'to put your fingers' -
and memorize which finger to use to press which key..
you can type without looking at the keyboard..
notice the 2nd row of the alphabets :
from your left : a d s f -
index finger on 'f'
middle finger on 's'
ring finger on 'd'
little finger on 'a'
from your right: ; l k j -
index finger on 'j'
middle finger on 'k'
ring finger on 'l'
little finger on ';'
'f' and 'j' are the 'home-key'..
notice that on most keyboards - there somekind of 'markings' on these two keys...
... basically it's like diving the keys on the board to lefts and rights.. with each finger assigned to a certain key/letter... and type using all TEN FINGERS.
you have to practice to always place your finger on the eight letters i've mentioned earlier.. with the thumbs resting on the spacebar... and start pressing/using the thumb to press the spacebar...
good luck...

i think just keep on practicing. the more you type, the faster you will get.
Check out Yahoo Type Shark...it is a typing test game under Yahoo Games..it is fun and helps improve your speed. i am up to 65 wpm in that game but cant seem to go higher.
also, chatting in various chatrooms has improved my typing speed. IMVU, Myspace, Yahoo, etc.
writing a lot of emails have improved my speed.
so, it is all practice. just keep typing.
