Ubuntu is great linux dist. But in order to start some windows applications U need to know a little more.
Good thing is to use virtualisation like WMware or something similar. And than start whatever you want from virtual image using:
rdesktop
which is remote access application. I am using it on my laptop right now :)

You cant run *.exe files in linux operating system as these are programmed to run in windows. for ubuntu you need to have the programs that are meant to run in debian operating system

A .exe file would usually be a Windows based executable file, so it is not suitable for Ubuntu at all.
Ubuntu is a Debian based Linux distribution, so you should be using a .deb file for installation of software. You can run a selection of Windows programs via a program called Cross Over Office, which will allow to support Microsoft Office and several other programs in Linux.

I guest this is the main tumbling block of Ubuntu. If all window program would just run there, windows would be history. I believe there is a virtual machine sort or something, I've seen one discussion here lately about photoshop but I cant seem to find it again, but for sure not all would run there.
