Sunburn or Sunblock for 5 month old?

I read on the side of my bottle of sunblock that you aren't supposed to use it on kids younger than 6 months old. I took my 5 month old outside today and had her covered from head to toe so she wouldn't get burned without any sunblock. The poor thing was so hot. What are you supposed to do with a baby younger that 6 months. I don't want her to get burnt but I don't want to subject her to any sunblocks that could be harmful to her. Do you put sunblock on your baby?

This really isn't a hard one - you don't use your sunblock on a child, you buy the ones that are specially made for children. They are designed for sensitive infants skin. Of course you should put sunblock on yor child but they should also be wearing thin long sleeved tops, hats, sunglasses & be under the shade. Then they aren't in the direct sunlight & wont get burnt. Try asking at your local chemist/pharmacy & see what infant products they have available, then select the one you think would be the best for your sitation. You could also avoid taking a child of that age outside if you cant get sunblock - a luke warm bath will help keep her cool, along with cool drinks of water, maybe sugar free ice blocks or cold fruit. Good luck for next time but if it really is THAT hot outside, then it's probably better not to take her outside at all, little ones burn & get hot so much easier than you or i do.

I put sunblock on my daughter when she was just a couple months old. I used Aveeno's natural sunblock. It said the same thing on the bottle, not to use on a child under six months. You could talk to your doctor about it if you were really worried about it. The way I look at it is that it's better to protect her skin from the sun's harmful rays then to have her sunburned. With all the skin cancer out there these days, you want to do the best for your child. If you are still unsure, speak to her peditrician and see what they have to say.

As the father of 5 kids, (youngest is Emma 6 months old btw) we have been lucky and our kids have not had sensitive skin, so we have used sunblock on the kids as young as 1 month old, they do make sunblock that is for little ones. If your baby is sensitive to different soaps, fabrics or anything, you may not want to use the sunblock. So far none of my kids have had any problems! We have had a couple of sunburns and they really really suck!!
