What Kind of animal is this?

Someone took this picture and posted on my local news website and they showed it on the news and tried to guess what it is but wasnt sure. Im thinking a really ugly wolf hybrid? The picture was taken in the northern Illionis area. And I am curious to know what it is. Can anyone help me? I put a link at the bottom.

That's a very strange looking animal...almost looks like some sort of wolf/coyote hybris. Not an animal I'd care to run into anytime soon...LOL

It looks like some sort of hyena but the head is smaller and it's a bit longer. Weird..

Wow! That "creature" was really creepy looking. And looking right into the camera kind of freaked me out. It does look like a mix of a bunch of different creatures. I would say hyena and wolf like others have said too. It's body looks like wolf but it's face is not thick enough to be a wolf.

I posted this discussion on yahoo answers also and they mentioned that the animal could have mange which would descibe the bald tail and patchy fur..They also said it could be a wolf/coyote. But its definetly ugly

but I live in northern illionis...i dont think there are any hyenas close to me

Well, I thought it might be coyote with mange... but the shape of it's head seems wrong;

Likely a hybrid of some kind... possibly one with mange (if it's tale is anything to go by), poor things.

Oh, and it could easily be a stray with mange... domestic dogs come in all sorts of shape and size...

Well it is NOT a hyena, they dont live in illinois lol. It is probably a wolf. Think of the napolian dynamite of wolves. Some animals come out handicapped too. lol. poor guy. probably doesnt get any a** LMAO

My vote would be on it being a coyote having a bad hair day. Looks kind of angry, kind of scared. I'd recommend you leave it well alone - it ain't no cute little puppy, that's for sure.
