the matrix

I'll make it easy for you to understand. The Matrix is actually what we live in (in the movie at least). The Matrix is supposed to be a computerized reality. In other words we don't really live in this life we have, we are connected to a computer and are really on a ship in the center of the earth (according to the movie ok, that is what it was really) Machines are now the ones who have mostly taken over people. So technically the Matrix is the reality we live in only it's not real. In simpler terms. Life is only and illusion, and we are actually being programmed by computers. That is what the Matrix is about. If you see the second and third part, you will understand more. This was on of my favorite movies.
