Do kids really need to learn about the War of 1812?

My son asked me this question years ago because he just was not getting why he had to learn about the War of 1812 and how it will relate to the information that he needs to work on a car, which now he works in a factory and understands why he needed the math and fractions, but why about this war? Myself, I can't remember even what I learned about it in school either. What is your opinion on teaching our kids about this War of 1812?

I for one think that certain things should be up to the student to decide to learn, yes learning about the war in 1812 would be real good for a historian to learn, but for a mathmatitian it isnt going to help to learn this. I understand that kids need to learn a little bit of everything to figure out what they want to do with there life, but i think that certain things need to be taught to only the people that will use them. If you know what i mean. I think if you take the basic english classes, after that its your choice to learn more english if you want. After you take the basic history classes then you chould be able to chose if you want to learn more, After you learn the basic math, then its your choice if you want to learn more. I think High school should be a little more like college. The students should have more of a choice on what they want to learn for there lives. But this is just how i htink

I know the high school in my area offers some pretty amazing classes, biochemistry, another class that studies the ocean. I never seen these classes offered in other high schools either. I know basic history, and math, and english are needed, but some of it just doesn't make sense to some of the students at all. Thanks for the comment.

I think that an overview of American History needs to be taught by the 6th grade. Things like the American Revolution, Civil War, and other defining moments. I think that the rest of American History should be offered as electives to children who show a propensity for the subject matter. Now that I'm 44 I am obsessed with history; I just find it fascinating. But when I was in school, I was only concerned with memorizing data long enough to do well on tests. I think my time could have been used to learn things that would be more useful in daily life as an adult.

I do think kids need to learn the history behind our country but how old was he when he was taught this. Because I don't believe they need to learn the history of our country or the war of 1812 at a very early age. I think the grade school should center on the reading, writing and arithmetic. Once they get into the higher grades than they can learn about the war of 1812.

yes Kids need to learn History. How can they grow up to be good citizens if they have no understanding of past events? This is what makes a country Strong and Proud. The part that bothers me is that kids only get one side of history. Take the dropping of the atomic Bomb on Tokyo. American kids learn why America did it but never what Japan thought of it. There are 2 sides to every story!

Well take it that this is the US 1812 war - can safely say that it was brushed over in a five minute history lesson when I did history at a UK school. The same lesson also included 10 minutes for the British war with Napoleon from the same time period. Overall though I think everyone should know about the history of their nation. manily because it gies people a sense of pride and an understanding about what has made their country what it is.

Even though I don't find History all that fun or that interesting, I believe kids need to learn it. History repeats itself, if we do not learn it we will make the same mistakes.

well I guess if a person wants to live in a bubble and now just a little bit and refuse to know anymore then no it is not important. If a person doesn't want to know about their own countries history how it developed, how it got to be the nation it is today through the past then no it is not important. The war of 1812 had great historical significance, that shaped the geography of the united states and Canada, an, entirely different country. The war was between the English and the USA, the USA won that war, Canada which was not yet a country but under British rule was affected. The English gave part of Quebec, the province I live in to US for losing the war and so the geography of two countries were affected. The war itself was about taxes that the British were imposing on the Americans and they do not think they were legal.

Hi Winterose, I totally agree with your comment on the fact that the war of 1812 shaped the geography of the United States and Eastern Canada. I beg to differ with you on the point that Canada (The British) lost the war. I subscribe to the school of thought that Canada won the war. Actually it came to a stalemate in 1814. The amazing and wonderous thing to me is that the hostilities did not flare up again. So often nations want to settle conflicts by decisive military victories.

the war of 1812 was between the usa an britain, canada was not the focus of the war, though our territory was divided up and given to usa as the spoils of war, I was a history major the first year of university. At that time in canadian history we were not a country but under british rule.

so any victories we may have had was still under the british rule and they lost in the end.

There is the adage that "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it". Now that might not be necessarily true with the War of 1812 but it is a part of this country's history. If the US had lost the war we wouldn't have to worry about voting for President because we would be under the rule of England once more. The men of this country lost their lives defending it and future generations should know about it. They should also learn about the other wars we have been in and how we as a country survived and evolved over the years. It is a part of our heritage. Without that background how can we appreciate what we have?

History is important to each and everyone one of us. Everything we learn helps us to be a better and more informed person in life. Everything we learn is not practical and we cannot use in our day to day life, but everything we know helps us to make decisions later in life. Knowledge helps us to be more creative in life.

The history are important to understand today. That is why they need to learn about wars in the first place. The boundaries did change after the wars, the happenings that impact our days are also important to understand. Things happens and impact thats why I think it is important to know about the history.

Me personally believe that the reason schools teach is plainly because its HISTORY point blank. I guess they feel that since it happen they want children t know about it and the significance of the war. I dont see what they would be getting out of knowing about the war of 1812. Being that half odf the students who learn it are not going to use the information any more in there future lives. Well excluding those that are hoping to be history teachers down the line. But to me there are a lot more things and subjects in this world that i believe a lot of schools need to take into cnsideration. Issues that are happening right now. That a lot of children can relate to.

i agree that it is pointless and nothing more than trivia at this point. it will not make a bit of difference in their futures. i think our education system lacks terribly in teaching coping skills and life experience. they should learn how to invest money, to balance a check book, how not to go into credit card debt, how to cook, how to sew, parenting classes, how to survive and on and on. of course all these courses should be age appropriate but you get my drift. instead they teach geometry to people who will never use it again and drill bits of history into their heads that make no difference whatsoever. they should know how their country was founded and what it stands for but maybe they should spend more time on how the government works and on and on. i cannot even tell you what the war of 1812 was about. goes to show how important it is in the scheme of things.

I think history is important, though it was never one of my favorite subjects. It teaches of both mistakes and successes as a country.
