I have been in your place and I know it sucks!! Sometimes it is just insecurity that makes children behave that way. But the thumb sucking is one habit I experienced hell to stop. But my daughter stopped it when she grew big enough to understand its implications. I tried Femite(a bitter liquid that is extreeeeeeeeeemely bitter and she managed to still suck her thumb...), but gradually she grew out of it while I persisted with my trying to stop her. Even now(she is 6 now), when she is asleep, she sucks her thumb at times and is not conscious of it. I guess it is buried deep in her unconscious and it might take a long time to rectify it completely..
The crying at night might be due to bad dreams or something that disturbs his sleep. My 20 month old son does that too. Sometimes I find that if he laughs a lot during the day, he ends up crying a lot too!! Don't know how that one works, but it is always like that

Don't worry about the thumb sucking. It's only a problem when you are dealing with permanent (not baby teeth) teeth and most children stop sucking their thumbs before that happens. Children will stop when they are ready. It's a form of self comfort that actually starts from inside the womb, they have ultrasounds showing babies in the womb sucking their thumbs.
As for the crying considering the age it sounds like it could be teething. It could be there is a noise out side that happens every night that startles him, like a bird or a truck going by. There could be a lot of reasons and with just crying there isn't much to go on.

alot of kids suck there thumbs they will eventually grow out of it..If he is off the bottle I would suggest giving him a nook. The crying situation just could be from dreams or cutting teeth it can actually be a number of things, but I wouldn't put lotion on his thumbs it could make him sick, 2 he is still young..he will break it.
