What is the longest time you've kept a car?

In my younger days, I got a new car every couple years. I had nonstop car payments, but a bright new shiny car all the time. Now I'm older, wiser, more frugal, and have less expendable income. This car I have now may need to last awhile longer. Pending retirement doesn't lend itself to big expenditures in my case. So how long do you think you can keep a car going? What is the longest time you've owned a car?

Oh, a convertible is fun - I bet the kids love it. We had a 1960 something convertible mustang - way cool and fun.

I bought my 1994 Buick Century in 1996 and I sold it this year 2008. I still miss it and I sure don't get the same gas milage in my new van.

I remember a couple cars I sold and missed afterwards. I have to think back and wonder why we got rid of them at the time.

Well all I can say is that you're not taking a lot of trips in that car. That is really low mileage for sure. I still think you may outlast the car though.

I've had my van new since 1999. I had my Mazda GLC that I got used from 1986 to like 1994 when I got my mom's Accord. So, I guess my van is the longest I've had a car.

If you've had these cars out west, they probably still look pretty good huh? Regardless, you hold on to the cars awhile.

The longest i have ever kept a car is the one I now own. i bought it nwe in 2003. I will be payed off next month. So I have had it a little over 5 years. I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off. I do not like making payments on a car.I can use that money for other things. As long as there is nothing wrong with a car I see no reason to get another one.

I really dislike my car payment. I had no choice at the time, but it's a drain. When five years and the car is paid off, I'm going to keep it.

The longest I have had a car was about 4 years and I think people could keep there cars longer if they didn't think they had to stay in a brand new vehicle every few years.I hope to keep the car I have now for much longer than it will take me to pay it off,and long as it looks nice and runs good a car is worth keeping.

It seems no longer the car is paid off, then we used to get a new one. This one will look good for a long time and we don't have little kids messing up cars anymore.

Right now, my car will be 10 years old in June, I am pushing for one or two or maybe 3 years on it. They are just too expensive.

I hope it lasts a good long while for you. A car payment does a number of a budget, I know.

I never had a car... but i can drive and automatic car... in my country the most famous form of transportation is the Jeepney... and they are everywhere... they are cheaper than buying gas car... and there is no worry about maintenance or the regular thing that we need to do for cars... But then... i still would like to have one of my own... but right now... i can't afford it...

I'm getting a nice education looking up things mentioned on myLot today. The origin of the Jeepney is interesting. On a few of the photos, they looked very similar to the Hummers sold here in the US.

Yes the origin is indeed very interesting... somehow... it was the american soldiers who brought the prototype... and Filipinos reinvented it to make it into their own...

Hello whittby. So far I have not had a car of my own though I want to have one of my own. I want to get a car for my wife as she knows how to drive. She learned how to drive years back, but I have not been able to get one for her due to the money spent on some other investments. I am sure that I will get one for her some day when I am financially moderate.

I have never bought a brand new car so all of the cars I have owned have been older and I have been at least the second owner of it. I bought a 1995 K car for $1.00 off of a church and I owned that car for 5 years and it didn't cost me anything in repairs. Till one day something really serious went on it, I don't know much about cars so I can't tell you what it was that broke, but I can say it would cost way too much to fix, so I just sold the car for $100 to a scrap yard. That is probably the longest I have ever owned the same car. Most of the cars I have bought were at least 15 years old and have only lasted me a few years, like 2 or 3 years. But in saying that I have never paid more than $500 for a car so if they last me a couple years I am okay with that, since they come cheap and I can find another one for cheap.

The car I have now is the longest I've owned a car. I bought it brand new in 1991. It's still going with 208,000+ miles on it. It's a Nissan Sentra.

I am really glad to hear your Nissan is lasting this long. My son has a 1992 Nissan Sentra with about 130,000 miles on it and he will need to keep it quite a few years yet. I'm going to mention your car to him.

The longest I've had one is 5 yrs. And that care I truly do miss, but we expanded our family and did not have enough room for all the carseats + booster seats. My hubby on the other hand I tease him as we've been togeather a total of 10yr and he has been thru as many vehicles as we've been togeather & I'm only on my 3rd *LOL* But I do think as we get older we learn that we don't have as many folks to impress anymore by how fancy our car is & if we an make the speakers bump ( = going deaf). But we do look for a vehicle that fits our family needs. Now if hubby would buy one within our budget that would be much easier on our wallets *sigh*

Oh I remember when I wanted "the" car. Had to feel special riding in it. Now it seems I'm looking for ease of driving - definitely need good visual all around in this crazy city too. In fact, if the darn gas wasn't an issue, I'd be driving a tank for safety lol. And we have car payments even with our nice economy cars. Got to keep one long enough to pay it off and then save for another.

I generally keep a car between 6-8 years. I try to trade it before repairs begin to be costly. I trade in my cars because it's just easier. I know it's not as cost effective in most cases but it works well for me. I traded in a Camaro, hotrod, last year for a Mazda suv and love it. Am sure I took a big loss but I just couldn't bring myself to sell outright.

I bought a 1998 Chevy Cavalier in February of 1998. I still own the car now even though my sister is the only one who drives it. It is the longest I have ever owned a car. It has over 250,000 miles on it. The body got a little messed up, but it runs just fine.
