To be honest... I haven't wasted my time with or been interested in software firewalls for a couple of as I have an outstanding hardware firewall attached to my network so my currency in this arena is not to date. That said, however, my favorite firewall for Windows was Outpost. I LOVED this Linux port for its power, flexibility, and stability. Similarly I employed Outpost on a Linux server but I typically employ something as simple as FireStarter as a template and then manually configure the firewall from then on. In my experience, people typically overemploy firewalls but fail to protect their systems with reasonable preventative techniques. I think it is because people have a general misunderstanding of what a firewall is and think a firewall makes them safe... nothing is further from the truth. At best, the best firewall can reject certain netattacks but the average user is more apt to be attacked by the trojans and malware they download from the sites they visit. Additionally what benefit is it to be invisible on the Internet when you actively go where problems are? If you can log on and use the site, the admins, and any people of malicious intent, know you are there and have access to the system. I used to teach an IT security class in which I showed people just how easy it is to access someone's computer the moment they access your site using php, ssi, and even asp scripts. Yet another reason why I am not too concerned with software firewalls in this environment.

Very well said. It is not what we have but how we use it ... and how we live using it. Just curious, what is your hardware firewall?

It really depends on the size and need of the network. For an enterprise sized network, for example, although its pricey and a bit overkill, I prefer Sonicwall but also employ honeypots to entice amateur hackers and sandboxes to catch and contain malware. On a smaller network, 25 -50 connections, some modern switches do a GREAT job. Finally, on my personal system, I simply use a fairly recent router with a nice firewall and then a sandbox and have ZERO problems. I have used Threatfire, as you mentioned below, and found it to be a good system. Honestly, I cannot recall why I stopped using it... Also for Wifi hackers, I used to employ myWIFIzone to alleviate the constant bombardment on my firewall - such attack could crash a software firewall and bring a hardware to a crawl - but got tired of being nice and will let someone onto my network so that I have their info and can take appropriate measures!

For a long time now I am using NOD 32 and I feel that this security suit is very good and efficient. It is very easy to use. The scanner works very fast. It has regular updates so you can the Congress tension free about the new virus threats. It is a very fast and well equipped firewall which never gives any problem and works on a computer pretty well unstuck all in all I feel it is a very good choice

Personally for me ZoneAlarm is the best firewall, zonealarm can effectively protect your PC from hackers and other threats, I've used a lot of firewalls but ZA proves to be the best. Good thing about this firewall is that ZoneAlarm is free for individual use. It's an easy to use firewall protection program that blocks hackers and other unknown threats. Also, it makes your system completely invisible to anyone on the Internet. I have personally used ZoneAlarm for years with no issues. It gives you the chance to accept inbound communications or turn them away and you can setup a list of programs that need to access the Internet that are listed as "ok". Zonealarm is very to use. It's not complicated to run, but still keeps out dangerous threats.

Before I was using sygate professional (around 3 years ago). But there have been no more updates to it so I switched to kerio for awhile. I didn't find it to my liking and security wasn't that good (after doing some leak tests, it flunked a couple of tests). Then I read about COMODO firewall. So I tried that one and to this day I have been using it. Excellent security provided (passed all leak tests). Plus, besides the firewall, it also has a feature called defense+ which monitors your computer for any possible threat coming from within your PC. Most firewalls concentrate only on the incoming threats to your PC (those that try to harm your PC from the outside) and just providing limited attention to outbound threats (those that come from your PC). I have to mention that I also have a strong hardware supplied firewall (which is my first line of defense). My COMODO firewall is mostly for outbound threats that can cause harm to my PC.
