Our dog, who is a miniature schnauzer named Sunshine & our cat, who is a calico of some kind named Shady are Best Friends! They fight sometimes but it is more of a play fighting than real fighting. But, for the most part they love to cuddle up with one another. Anyone else have a cat & a dog that are best friends... or any other pets for that matter?!

I only had a dog and cat combination once and the dog never hurt the cat but if the cat was scratching where she shouldn't be, we would tell the dog to get tao, and she would run after her and of course she would jump away, it was so funny.

LoL! We do that too sometimes with our dog & cat. Our cat is an indoor cat and sometimes if we have the sliding door to our balcony open and the cat starts trying to get out of our screen we will tell the dog to go get "Shady" and he runs after her likes yours did and the cat will stop and run away. That way we don't have to get up off our butts while watching TV to get the cat away from the door! LoL! :)

We've had our cats since they were tiny kittens, and they're classic, pampered home-cats.
When Angel came alog to join our family, a beautiful energetic bouncing little Shih Tzu puppy, we hoped that the 2 Cats and her ould get used to each other after a while, and hopefully even form a little relationship amongst themselves.
Things didnt work out well at all unfortunately ~ Little Angel (the shihtzu pup) was so enthusiastic she would bound up to the cats and be on their backs with her paws whilst they were trying to get away from her for some peace! She would be all over them, going cray, all in playfulness, but the cats werent amused!
Milly and Meaty our cats are just so chilled, lol, they like to take things easy and it really started to upset them, that they couldnt walk accross the living room without a puppy hitching a free ride on top of him! LOL it was funny to watch, but after a while the puppy got a bit stressed b/c the cats wouldnt play with her and just didnt seem to want anything to do with her.. i felt really sorry for Angel because all she wanted to do was play, but her idea of play was much to rough and tumble for our cats!
So Millya nd Meaty the cats went really into themselves from then on.. instead of them meandering through the house as and wen they wanted to, and coming up on my bed to have a nap, they just went to the highest shelfs possible in the house, and stayed there looking uncomfortable.
This never got any better, and the cats started to seem so miserable, and for that matter so did the puppy.
It was realltlly sad, but for the pets sake, we realised that one of them had to go, so we set out trying to find a lovely new home for Angel the ShihTzu that didnt have cats (she'd started barking at them by now aswel).. Very tearfully we handed Little Angel over to my Mum, so she could go and live there ~ they have no other animals and a huge house and garden, and lots of people to keep her entertained and walked with all that amazing energy the little pup has,
We miss Angel a lot ~ but Meaty and Milly are back to their relazed and loving selves again, and feel safe to walk about and lay on our bed without getting bothered now xxxxx

I'm so sorry that you had to get rid of your little puppy. That is very sad. Even though our dog wasn't too thrilled when we adopted our cat and the cat was scared of our dog, they eventually got much closer. During the day, of course, our dog pounces on our cat and chases her & barks at her. But now, three years down the road they are best buddies. It didn't take the whole three years but it was a very gradual process. The cat still seems annoyed at times, but at night we put them in our bathroom so there are no accidents on our dog's part and the cat is there to keep him company. Sometimes we will check on them and they both are in the same bed together! So cute! :)
The cat is sometimes even the one who joins the dog wherever he is lying around the house. It is adorable. They are both about the same age (5 years old) but I got my dog as a puppy and we didn't adopt the cat until about 3 years ago. It does take time. However, I am very glad that your mom was able to adopt your puppy. At least now you probably get to see her sometimes and always get updates on how she is doing. :)

Booboo likes the dogs well enough. Our cat, Gizmo's sister went to a friend's mother. Molly has latched on to the part Chow dog she has and that is her dog. Cartman doesn't understand why other cats don't like him as much as Molly does.
Then my brother's ex's dog found and adopted a kitten after having a false pregnacy - I always refered to the kitten as her false puppy.

I have two cats that love dogs. It doesn't matter which dog it is, they just love dogs. One of those two doesn't like any cats which I find funny because she's a cat herself but oh no, she hates other cats and tolerates them because I have 9 all together. The one in the picture that I'm enclosing is Sammie. He loves anybody that's nice to him but he's scared of his own shadow. It has to be his idea to come up close or it just isn't going to happen. This day he curled up with one of our german shepherds which was so cute that we had to take a picture. He's the one that loves dogs and cats, doesn't matter to him. My calico is the one who hates cats.

They are so adorable CatsandDogs! I just love the picture you uploaded of Faith & Sammie. Sammie is the cat right? I showed the picture to my 13 year old son because he loves cat & is definitely a cat person, like my husband. I have never owned a german shepherd. We have always had miniature schnauzers. But, I have heard they are very smart. That is funny that your calico doesn't like other cats. I don't think my cat would get along with another cat either if we were to get one.

We had two rescue dogs and after a while they were inseparable. We also had some finches and every time I cleaned their cage out the female one would just sit there staring at the birds fluttering around in the cage. I am sure she had some designs on them and was just begging them to leave the cage!!!Thanks for sharing this with us

Hi koala, the first one was an Aquita (Japanese Husky (tan one in photo) - the Japanese use them to look after their children) crossed with German Shepherd. He was so good looking that people always offered to buy him even though he limped from when a car ran over him (he was 2 months old), which killed his brother but his sister was OK - she went to Germany.
The second was a real Heinz 57 mix of husky and anything else that was around. She (black & white) was really abused, was part of a family of 3 other dogs and 6 cats. She had part of her ear biten off and was scared of any human contact. After 6 months she finally accepted us and became house trained (they forgot to mention that she wasn't at the shelter!)
Here's a photo to show you how gorgeous they were together..... we unfortunately had to leave them behind when we moved from Spain to the Dom Rep (BIG BOOOOOO HOOOOOOO) but we got to house them together :)

We used to own a cat and our collie didnt really like him they tolerated each toher and sometimes slept nearby but not for long, my little crossbreed however really quite liked him though she refused to share her food with him, she treated him as a memeber of her 'pack' including telling him off if he stepped outt line. She loves cats and mixes well with a customer of mine - again she treats them like dogs.

A few years ago we had two poodles and a cat. We got the cat after the dogs, but the cat turned out to be the boss! They all got on great, and the three of them used to curl up in front of the open fire on the rug. Sometimes the cat would tease the dogs because he wanted to play, and they would chase each other all round the house and in to the garden!
The only time they didn't get on was when the cat wanted the fireside rug all to himself, and he would pace round the dogs in a circle, until they moved - and they always did!

Hi abbey19 -
Yes, I think the cats always rule the house, even if the dog "thinks" he does... he really doesn't. LoL! Cats & dogs can be so cute. My little schnauzer is all curled up on the couch right now. He looks so adorable. My cat is always very very frisky and active in the early morning while everyone is getting ready to go to school (my 13 yr old son is in middle school & my husband in dental school - lol). So, needless to say, no one 'actually' goes to work right now! I'm having medical problems & thus can't work currently. Our cat & dog just love having me home all day long every day! :)
Hope you have a wonderful weekend abbey19!

They are funny to watch. My cat & dog seem to like to run around and play first thing in the morning when I am not even completely awake yet. I think they are trying to irritate me! We live in an apartment complex so I try to keep them quiet early in the morning so my dog's barking doesn't bother our neighbors.

We adopted an old stray cat for a couple of years towards the end of his life, he and my dog hated each other. My dog was fine with him at first but he would his at her everytime she walked by. Finally she got tired of it and she she snap back at him, that was it though they would just do their mutual snapping, and move on. My dog did stay with my mom for about 3 months while we were trying to sell our house. My dog and her cat were best of buds, they would play together, the cat would get up on its hind legs and box the dog, and the dog would move her head about in a way like she was boxing her back. They never hurt each other or even tried they just played that way, it was really cute.

Yes, I have 3 big dogs and 2 indoor cats. All 3 dogs are absolutely in LOVE with Colby, she loves them, too. She'll lick them and sleep with them. Our youngest dog even shuts himself in the bathroom with her and just lies next to her. It's pretty funny. She is the nicest cat and I am SOOO happy I rexcued her from the shelter. She is just so sweet.

Hi amd12866 - Awww... seems like you have a houseful of wonderful pets! We just have the one miniature schnauzer & the cat. Being in an apartment we are only allowed to have two, but even if we could have more there is just not enough space for more paws. :)
