I Have a new home with all white walls. I need to start selecting colors, but I am not sure what to do. Do you get influenced by trends and whatsource do you use?

A decorator friend of mine taught me these two things. 1. Go look inside your closet. What is the major color? The major color in your closet is close to your favorite color choice. 2. Look at your sofa (for the living room) or the bed cover (for the bedroom). Squint your eyes just a bit and see the color that comes through. The color you see when your eyes are squinted is the color you should select for the walls - unless - the sofa is a single color. If the sofa is a single color, choose the opposite color on the color wheel to make the sofa pop out from the walls. The major trend for wall paint now is earth tones - muted browns and greens. I think they are stunning colors.

just select wall paints according to the place, for example for a child's room it must be colourful with fantasies, cartoons.the bedroom usuall blue suits well, then try your own colours, its your home do whatever you want, its only colours it can be ammended,ok don't be neutral coloured......

Would you consider reselling value with personailing a room them? This could actually be another discussion topic, but it fits your ideas. I like creating unique themes, but hate tohave to cover it up in a few years.

Hi there Ailina!I always choose neutral colors so it will easily go with the color of the curtains, sheets, and throw pillows that I already have. I think it's more practical and I just invest on some colorful furnitures or decorations instead.

Came home from work today tired and did not want to do anything or go anywhere. I needed a little time though to unwind... Glad for your post. I have navajo white walls in my apartment and would like to have bright white walls... If your walls are bright white than I have wall envy. lol. If I were wanting to pick out paint I would snip a little bit of the fabric from the underside back of furnishings, and have also a little bit of carpet, and take that in to a paint store and compare them to swatches they have available and then see which goes best with the fabrics if I wanted to use paint that is already mixed and ready to go. Otherwise bring the swatches of fabric, figure what color would go best with it and have it created. I think that although magazines may give you ideas of what you like, the colors in them are sometimes not at all what will wind up on the walls so I do not know if they are the best way to pick... And the internet may not be the best way either depending on the color quality of the monitor (mine is one that would not work for paint matching as mine is too dark most of the time.) The person who suggested that you consider the colors that you like to wear is accurate... especially making sure that your palate of colors is somehow reflected in the painting of your place... Also look at a book on the healing power of colors and see if there are any colors that are said to be healing in the areas that you want to be healed.

Thanks for the best response. I appreciate it. You might want to take someone along with you when you go and choose the paint colors as sometimes they can be deceptive and two pairs of eyes are better than one. Hugs. Good luck to you.

I usually pick colors on a whim, but since I have a good eye for color, it usually works out. Personally, I always pick colors that I would look good wearing (warm colors work best for me), after all this is my home, and should compliment me. I don't go with trends because they change so frequently and older trends tend to look dated (think of the mauve, country blue and ivory of the late 80s - shudder).

I know what you mean about dated trends. I remember when white trim with color scemes started coming out. A friend was having her house professionally painted and he was usuing cream as the trim. I said, "Girl! Why? Bright white is in." That was 7 years ago.

try to visualize what the over-all look of your new home will be. will it be oriental? minimalist? futuristic? also, take into consideration the furnitures that you'll be using. you might want to look at magazines about the latest home designs. better yet consult an interior designer. hope this helps.

I like your idea of visualizing first. Wonder if there is a free download program out there to change colors and play with styles?
