Another Feature That Would Be Nice Here At MyLot

I just came from a discussion from a friend of mine who was asking how one could find a friend of theirs that they knew was on MyLot. Some of us suggested the idea of just typing in the http://www.mylot.com/ and the users name...but that's provided you knew what your friends user name was, right?
One feature they do have at places like MySpace and Facebook is the ability to search for friends...that's how I found my long lost friend of eleven years. I typed in his name at Facebook (and later MySpace) and nearly fell out of my chair with a "bingo"--found you!!! I was so happy about this I was doing cartwheels!
well it got me thinking...wouldn't it be great if we could find friends here as well--I mean other than our MyLot friends. Say you want to know if some childhood friend of yours is here, or maybe even a present friend, and you wanted to know if they were also a fellow MyLotter, but didn't know their user name, but only their "real" name. Wouldn't it be a great feature here at MyLot if all one had to do was type in their "real" name and viola you found their user name and presence here...??
What do you think? Have you often wondered if some of your "real" life friends are here both past and present, but haven't a clue who they might be under their user name?

That is so true! Today I was trying to find a friend of mine here and wasn't able to. That is so frustrating! Do you think the admin would actually consider this suggestion if enough people signed on it?

That would be a neat idea I suppose unless you dont want to be found hehehe. I have also found a few old friends on myspace and other sites like that so I would have to agree it wouldnt hurt.

We might be able to get mylot to put in a search feature for user names, but they are a stickler on privacy and I doubt very much that they would go for real names though.

This is a good idea in principal, but it will only work if people completely fill out their profile info or use their real name for that matter. There are a bunch of people search sites online that will do this for you (I've found a couple of old school friends), rather than hoping that someone you knew years back may have, on the off chance, signed up for Mylot.

Well most people (if they're honest..LOL) usually do fill out their info giving their real name and then come up with a user name. Yup, I've done a few general people searches too, and came up with zip...its harder with female friends for instance as most would be under their married names now

What a great idea! I have wondered if any of the people I know from real life are members on here. It would be great if we could find out! I hope admin will be able to make this happen.

as long as they also had an opt out function as well, which gives people the choice.that way the people who would like it still can:)
i personally wouldn't want it, just personal preference.i've got one whacko of an ex.

It might be a good way to find who's already here & who can get invited. However, for others who may NOT want to be found, particularly by the wrong person, it would probably have a negative impact on. If MyLot offered this feature, they would also need to implement an additional thing for people who do NOT want to be found (such as like Scarlet_woman pointed out).
On MySpace, I have a friend who is on her fifth MySpace profile because of, at first, an ex-husband, & then an ex-boyfriend. They don't offer the option of being "unfindable" on MySpace. I don't know about facebook.

Wouldn't it be a security issue if someone could find you by your real name??
Most people here use fairly odd names and it's clear that they don't want to be recognised by their real name.. After all, you can get access to a district and a country for people that have filled out their profile properly.
Here's the scenario then: maybe someone young and a bit naive fills out their town, country and age correctly... an internet predator randomly searches out boys or girls names until they get a traceable geographical location. Checks out their photo's, likes what they see and checks out what they have been saying, and the kind of conversations they have been having.. hey presto! a potential stalker is born... or worse.
If you want to be found, then Facebook and related sites are the place to register - I like the anonimity, think of the stink that was raised when MyLot changed it to make it easier to follow peoples' threads - how much worse if it were possible to find your name...
I am not in the phone book, but imagine if the phone rang and a stranger started having conversation pertaining to what you had said on Mylot...

I disagree! I would never give my real name on an open forum where my hometown was on my profile. That would be just asking for all the nuts and sickos not only to be able to stalk me on myLot but in real life.

Hi pye,
This is an interesting idea you have, and a good one for those so inclined. I know for a fact, that most (or all) of my offline friends that I currently am in touch with, are not myLot users. To be honest here, sadly, many of them think it's just weird, and the fact that I'm into it, well ... I guess there's a possibility that some old school friends, etc., that I've totally lost touch with 'may' be on here. Since they're adding new features here quite often now, maybe admin. would consider doing this.

That is a pretty good idea actually, I did not even know that you could do that at myspace or facebook, I do not use them much, but I may have to go and try that out and see if I can find any of my childhood friends!! I am not sure if anyone I knew from childhood would be on here though, but I guess you never know.

yes I have wondered if any of my real life friends might be mylotters. specially since we received a surprise gift of a new micro wave oven at Christmas timeand some mylotter responded to one of my discussions and added how do you like your new micro wave oven and I do not think I had mentioned that here so wished I could find out this person's real name.

Hi Pye, this really is a good idea especially since we have no idea what user name someone would use in a forum. Maybe they will consider this.

i think it would a great idea, so long as you can only find your "life friends" if you know their user name.
i might add that, one reason i like my lot, is cause i can post questions that bother me in life, and sometimes they maybe be about trouble am having with a friend, lover, family etc.
so i personally like being hidden in confidence and having the ability to ask honestly for help with advice from my lotters!
