American Idol: Was Carly's husband to blame for her getting voted off?

So Carly Smithson was voted off of American Idol this week, which is ironic because her performance of "Jesus Christ Superstar" was one of her best performances of the season (even Simon liked it). There's been speculation that her husband's appearance may have scared off voters. In case you haven't seen him in the audience, Carly's hubby is heavily tattooed- he has tats all over his face and neck. Some people think his look may have been too much for mainstream American voters. What do you think? I think her hubby has NOTHING to do with her singing ability. I noticed he wasn't shown in the audience last night when she lost, which surprised me.

Well even Carly has a rocker kinda look to her. Even though she sings more Diva. Shes got a half sleeve on one of her arms. I was looking at it the other day and it looks like a tat of Amy Winehouse's Face ?!?! Anyone? Anyways. I have had many piercings and funky hair and been discrimnated against many times. I wouldn't doubt that America would do that to her. Her husband is so hot though!

Ah, a woman after my own heart. I get the whole discrimination thing all the time because of my tatts, but I have always thought that tattooed women were very hot. Funny that you have the Avon avatar, I actually work in the Avon warehouse here in Atlanta

cool cool.. boo to discrimination. The company I work for now prides itself on being accepting and allowing its employees to be whoever they are... but it still doesn't allow facial piercings or funky coloured hair. I had to loose my tongue and my nostril piercing to work there. That is funny that you work in the avon warehouse.. Conincidences. I really should change my picture though... its been up there for a while and even I'm getting bored of it.. lol

Thats quite the conspiracy theory, one which I wholly doubt. If that were really the case, she would have been gone week one as they showed him just about every week. I always find it a little odd that people are afraid of those of us who are heavily tattooed. I'm glad to see you don't subscribe to that theory

I agree, inked. The first few weeks though, they only showed him from the side where he wasn't tattooed.

At the auditions they did one of those close ups on her where they interviewed her etc. They showed both her and her husband in total view. You could see all his tattoos. I think at one point they even showed them in a tattoo shop. Personally I just think Carly was a little boring. Besides it is AMERICAN idol.... so the likelihood of an Irish woman winning it.. quite slim.

I don't think her husband had anything to do with it. They are suppose to be voted on talent, but I think there are some tiny boopers who are voting for the cutest instead of the one who can sing the best. It is really ashame that it is a popularity contest, I really thought it would be Brooke or Jason to go home this time. Again I was wrong. I don't like Syeshia too much, and I missed her performance, so I can't say if she was good or not, but based on what I did see, it should have been 1 of the 2 I mentioned above that went home, and certainly not Carly.

I can not think of one reason that she was voted off. I think that she is one of the best singers there, and that her last performance was wonderful. i really do not think that it is because of her husband's looks, it seems too idiotic. i really can not think of one reason why she was voted off.

I would hope that wasn't the reason. Her husband has been shown many times. I always thought she was going to be voted off for already having a record deal. she is talented; however, she wasn't one of my favorites. I couldn't believe that syesha was in the bottom two. i thought jason would have been. it will be interesting to see how the remaining contestants are going to do Neal Diamonds songs.

Shy - I have to say I agree most heartily with your concepts on the idea. Though I was surprised that Carly was voted off the show, it was even more surprising to me personally to see that she'd been voted off before Jason. It's not that Jason is a bad artist per se, it's just that he is not as good vocally as some of the others. Unfortunately American Idol is as much, if not more, a popularity contest than it is a singing contest.

I doubt that people think that way! I think that people find the ones that they like and vote for them, but it just might have been that her fans weren't voting that night. AI says it all the time, you have to vote to keep your star in the competition!

If people votes against her because of her hubby's tats, then they are IDIOTS!

if that is why she got kicked off that would be so crazy to me. the level of peoples awareness in what they do and think is amazing to me. judgment of others by looking at them, is sad.

I was wondering if maybe the reason she didn't get many votes is because the show is taking place in conservative Christian America, and for anyone who isn't familiar with the Jesus Christ Superstar production, the song is probably going to come off sounding blasphemous. I can see a lot of people freaking out about such a song. I don't think the tattoos have much to do with anything. If that were the case, she wouldn't have made it so far into the competition because both of them have been seen multiple times with tattoos. People would be used to it by now. I am also wondering why American Idol is having themes based on singers that were famous YEARS ago, instead of people who are more current. Even 80's music would be okay. But c'mon, next week the mentor is Neil Diamond. Neil freakin' Diamond? Who under the age of 30 is even going to know who that is? Most of the voting demographic are teeny-boppers with too much time on their hands. Why are they not catering to them? Speaking of teeny-boppers voting, why is Jason Castro still there? He's awful.

I think thats just grasping at straws, I don't think so, I would hope the american people would be above not voting for someone because of her husbands appearance.

I think Carly was the lowest votes for many reasons, but not because of her husband's tattoos. If that was the case I don't think she would have made it to the top twelve! I think she never really found her musical identity during the show. She also pandered more to Simon than to the general public who held her fate in her hands. As well as the fact that a lot of people never really got over her failed record when they think Idol is for people who never had a shot before. Also I don't think she picked up many of Kristy Lee's voters. I did like Carly, but I think it was her time to go.
