Potty training

What is your experience with potty training?
My mum started to put me on potty when I was 6 months and she did the same with my brother (who is btw 12 years younger). Obviously we were not fully trained until perhaps 10 - 12 months during a day. Also I think as the nappies were not disposable, she had one more reason to put as on a potty.
I personally think its a good idea to start under the age of 1. Please dont crucify me ;-) It's just my opinion. I know the text books say you should start at about 18 months otherwise you will traumatised the child. Im not big fan of reading books on how you should do this and that. I prefer to ask people with their own experience and use my common sense. But Im not saying I get it right. We all learn ;-)
I have already started to put my 8 months old on a potty once a day. Just for the experience. She didn't seem to be upset by it.
Anyway I appreciate every child is different.
One of my friend who has two children has only started to potty train her 2 and half year old son. I think that is bit late to start. She is having big problems. He is now "traumatised" and doesn't want to use it.
When she was training him, she stop giving him nappies and you can imagine, the ordeal she was facing. He managed to wet everything in his way.
I don't know how this is done, so Im curious, is this how it should be done? Obviously with bigger children. You don't give them nappies, so they are forced to use the potty?
I appreciate everybody's input and thank you ;-)

Well personally sitting a small baby on a potty seems to me like a waste of time, im not cristicising those who do it its simply my opinion. I prefer to wait until my children are ready, for my eldest that was just over 2 and half, she wasnt traumatised but because she was old enough to recognise when she wanted to go and voice this fact we found it really easy and she was dry day and night from that first day. My youngest has only just turned 2 4 weeks ago she isnt ready and I wont rush it, every child is different some children are ready at 18 months some not until they are 3 even 4 years old.
I always think its best to wait until the child knows what they are doing but getting them used to a potty at any age definatley wont hurt just not for me really. Having cared for many children as my work ive seen children toilet train at all different ages there is no right age for all children collectively maybe just an "average age" but there is a right age for each individual and I think as long as the child and parent are happy then the right age will happen in time where they can toilet train with ease and a smile.

Hi Kezabelle,
many thanks for your opinion. It ss always good to hear how other people do it.
My other reason is also to save little bit on nappies. It won't make huge difference, but still.
Btw the picture of your daughter (I pressume it's your daughter?) is very cute ;-)

My oldest daughter was almost potty trained at 13 months. Then when I had her little sister when she was only 15 months she back tracked. So, she was potty trained at 3. Now my youngest daughter will be 3 in 2 weeks and is still petrified of the potty. I've tried everything. She freaks out and everything. I will be buying her gerber undies for her birthday so hopfully that works out pretty good.
