My husband asked me this last night and I really don't know.
Does it just all of a sudden pop like a balloon? Does the baby push so hard that it breaks? or what?

Think its to do with the muscles contracting and preparing to push the baby out.
Doing abit of research about it and I have found out that its to do with the membranes of the wall of the fetal sac being made of three layers (decidua, chorion and amnion).
Since I cant copy and paste I'll give you the link so you an read it for yourself and explain to hubby!!

I am not really sure what makes the water break for sure. With my firt child I was sleeping and I woke up and water was running everywhere with my second child the doctor broke my water.
