My mum has just gone back to college, she is 82 years old and as lively as a 30 year old. She is very creative, makes cards, paints, and does calligraphy. She has been making creative crafts for eyars and suddenly she has decided to go to college to do an arts foundation course. She got a grant for her studies, and for her workbooks, and of course as her age she is also getting free bus fares. Its a real fun thing to see her looking for tote bags to carry her school books in and preparing her lunch with an apple and chocolate bar.She has also gone out and bought herself some trainers , she looks a riot in her long mac and flats. Who is the oldest student that you know ?

I think this is the oldest student i have ever known. That is really a woman that deserves a lot of respect cause education got no age at all. you should support her the best you can.
you have my best wishes and good luck.

WoW! your mom is awesome. I think it is great to be out of boredom, learn something, and have fun. I've seen a few old people in my college but there are more in University. I saw a couple of 80 years old I guess in Religion class. There was also a student of the age of 65 in my biochemistry course. There is no limit to learn. I think your mother is a great inspiration. When I am discouraged at myself in my study and see old people not willing to give up, it encourages me alot.

Here in Canada, it's common to see some elders at school. I think it's great. School is not only for young ones. Age does not matter alot. She is still strong in mind and not willing to give up. That person who doesn't believe lives in Brazil so maybe over there they don't see alot of adults going back to school. I think it's a sad thing. Have a nice day :)

Wow, that is really cool that your mom still wants to learn at that age.
I think the oldest students that I've been in class with were in their 50s. Some were just taking classes like guitar lessons or something like that. Others were actually going for either their second degree or even their first one. I think it must really be hard to go back to school at that age. For me, sometimes it seems hard enough just being a little bit older than everyone else. I don't really relate to a lot of the small problems these other students are going through and then they all think I must be really dumb to be at school so long. I think a 50 year old student trying to get a degree would have that problem a lot.

Yes I know what you ean when I did my first degree I was 30 and felt ancient, everyone else was much younger - but now I am doing an MA and we are all of a similar age and that makes a difference. It is hard to go back when you are a mature student as you dont seem to fit in anywhere.
As far as my mum is concerned she is a bit of a celebrity as you can imagine - gues you have to be either really old or really young to get the respect and acknowledgeemnt!!
Thanks for your post

Yeah for your mum! Its never to late to go back to school. I think its great to hear things like this. I think the oldest person in any ofmyclasses sofar was in her 50's.But I have a friend whose ma is in her 60's that is going to nursing school, andanother about the same age who went back for an arts thing.
