How do you compete with Gas prices

So now that gas has been going up constantly what are you doing to pinch from one source to pay for it. I mean the paycheck hasn't gone up any but today gas is raising again. Food is costing more because it costs a lot to ship it. So you need to cut back somewhere where do you go? It's almost summer so the kids don't need to wear shoes right? and we can all walk to the corner store for a few items. But sooner or later we have to get in the car and drive and pay the big oil companies their money. I wish I could just get a little back from them.

I do not drive, but my hubby does and we have a big car as we have 4 kids so when we use ours for anything it costs us quite a bit. My hubby at the minute only uses it for work and so we are not doing too bad, he does not live too far from where he works and so we manage to keep the costs down pretty well. Our food bill has gone up quite a bit each week but I have juggled things about and changed things so I am keeping that quite low still at the minute, but it is hard work to keep on top of things and having to budget so tightly for everything.

When it comes to groceries I have always only bought meat if it is on sale and when I come across what I feel is a great deal I will stock up. I can buy a lot of plastic baggies for the meat for about a dollar and enjoy some of our favorites whenever we want them. I try to keep the freezer full.

Well you have a bit of catching up to do in the US to get near to UK fuel prices!
Actually it is not so much the increase in the cost of fuel from the oil companies but the way the government looks upon the tax on fuel as the 'golden egg'.
The more we are brainwashed into thinking that cars are causing global warming the more the government can raise taxes without too much complaint.
We are now paying nearly $10 a gallon!!!

OUCH!!! I think I would die if gas was that high. I only take the car out when I need to and I make more than one run at a time. If I need to drop only one thing off I wait for another day when I have other things to do in the same area. But we all have to get to work and school so the car has to get out daily. My daughter takes her daughter and her sister in the morning to where they have to be on the way to her job, If I can I pick everyone up so she can come right home after work.

We are cutting back on fun things we do, even though we really never did much before. I am also trying desperately to become debt free in the next year, excluding the house and one vehicle. That will save us some money. I have also started doing some work on the side. Our oldest son also buys some of his own EXTRAs, as he now has a job and gets to work several hours a week.

i have a trueearnings credit card from costco and american express, everytime i spend on gas i get 5 percent cashback. I usually buy my grocery at 'food for less' then they give you discounts on thier gas about 5 cents to 15 cents per gallon depending on how much your grocery receipt is.

I see there are a few grocery stores jumping in and saving us money. The only one we have locally is fleetfarm saving us 4cents a gallon but they also charge 5 cents more per gallon than I normally pay.

Wishing is a great dream. Plant the garden in hopes it will help. Save on the water with a downspout rain water collection of some sort. Consider fewer extras of course. I will hang out the clothes for summer to save on dryer bills. I hope to put some things on craigslist, and ebay. I plan on continuing to do things like mylot that bring in a small check every so often. I am hoping that the kids can get by as often as possible with as little as possible. My daughter has BIG plans on working for girl scout summer camp this summer. She earned enough to go to horse back riding summer camp and we will have to pay for the venture week long summer camp at 175 they sure aren't getting cheaper. I doubt she will get a class ring but I bet they will be up for sale since 10th grade is where my son got one. That will be a cut BACK. I actually plan on applying for a campership for the 175 for her venture crew camp but if we have to pay that we will. When hubby is working/gone I will shut off the air, unless I have company. I do try to do all things outdoors before dark so I turn no lighting on to do it. I did vent the dryer in for winter. I was squeezing as much as I thought I could before so all I have been doing is trying to make up for it online. If there was more I am not doing, I can't honestly say what it is. But keeping buckled down and praying. I can say I am in less debt and others owe me more. This isn't exactly comforting but it only means I am doing far better overall. It sure doesn't seem like it when we are squeezed so tight on daily needs. Definately look to others for the things YOU don't need new. Maintain what you can and buy second hand what you must. I hope that we all find our new ways to become habitual and remember that baking soda cleans anything like "cleansers" and vinegar cleans almost everything else like spray cleaners. Stock up on sale items you will use. Share with a friend/swap. I give one friend stuff from grocery I buy cheap cause I get so much she shares something else she has gotten stocked/cheap. God Blesses!

Well I sure hope you go. I am glad you like my ideas. I thought about it alot. I know I would love to figure out a way to bottle the cool night air but so far no luck for the heat in summer. Or the warmer air in winter from the day sun for the evening in winter. I am also still thinking about cashing in on the light bulb conservation. If I buy 1 new light bulb per month and then stock them up whenever I need to replace one, I might have the newer less engergy ones everywhere in about 3 years maybe? I have a lot of light bulbs/fixtures in my house. I am still hoping to replace the outdoor lights with motion detecting ones. That way when you step out they come on and only last about 5 minutes. Unless your not motionless still. I still dry all my sheets/blankets/robes and coats even in winter by hanging them over a door and turning them throughout the day. Adds moisture to the dryer air in winter that develops in doors as well as they usually will dry in less than a day that way if you spread them out as much as possible. I also forgot to mention. Don't buy dryer sheets if you don't have to have all that smell. Buy the liquid and get a shampoo amount on a old sock then wet it after you turn in inside out a little extra from the next load of wash with water and throw it in the dryer. Results are less smell but definately static free and good smelling.

You know I love all your ideas. Some of them I have tried and some are new ones. I was very seriously planning on taking a trip this year to visit a close friend in South Carolina that promised she would keep her air conditioning on all day for me if I came even tough I know it would have cost her dearly. I am so afraid that at $4.00 and $5.00 a gallon gas I will not be able to visit her. She is such a very dear friend and year after year I try to visit and something always gets in the way. Maybe I can hold onto some of my stimulus check and make my dream come true.

One bonus I have is our local grocery store, Kroger, also has a gas chain. Each month they give you points per dollar you spend in the store. Those points go towards gas discounts. 10, 20, 30, and 40 cents a gallon. Thankfully, with my big family, we almost always get 20 cents and every couple of months we get the 30 cent discount. I take advantage of that, when I've got enough cash to fill er up. (you only get 4 discounts a month).
Other than that, I don't really do anything different. In the summer we walk more, we live in town so its not too difficult. I also only shop second hand stores for clothing. I get my household needs at family dollar and big lots. I just look for the best deals and bargains, and have really cut back on emotional purchases.

I like that the grocery store is recognizing the issue and offering discounts on gas when you buy groceries sound like a win,win for them and you.As long as they are competitive in pricing otherwise.many times you pay more just for the discounts.

I think the same...it's too bad they have let this issue go on and on and not done something before now. You are right...everything will keep going up as they have to compensate for the higher delivery costs too...it's a vicious circle!

I agree that this has been an issue going on for way too long and now the government thinks it should have a meeting to discuss it. I say I have been discussing this for at least 2 years. Where were they?

bike. Bus. Take other types of public transportation. Walk. Carpool. I don't need to travel very far to get along with my life so I just do all that sort of stuff. Or you could buy a scooter. They are so incredibly cheap to run. My brother has one an he pays about $8 to fill it up (maybe less) and that lasts about 2 weeks

The scooter is actually something I have considered. Now I just need to find the couple hundred dollars it costs to buy one. Do you have extra cash?
