Scared of Clowns

I went to school with a girl, and I still keep in contact with her, who was always afraid of clowns. It surprised me because she was pretty tough, and of all things, I wouldn't think clowns would be her achilles heel. It's not the strangest phobia in the world, but it is quite unusual. Do you know anyone or have heard of anyone who is afraid of something that seems so normal to you, but so awful to them?

Just so you know the name for such a phobia is: Coulrophobia. That is the irrational fear of clowns. I swear some of the names they come up with for phobias are strange. I happen to be terrified of clowns so that is why I know of it. They have always scared me.
Now my father has a fear of water, he's hydrophobic. He can bathe or shower, even sit in a pool but he can't have the water go over so high nor can he handle it being splashed in his face. He cannot swim for this reason. He made sure all of us kids could and he also told us if he ever for some reason was drowning not to try and save him. He was afraid he'd pull us under.
What is really strange though is my one brother has a fear of the number 13, this is known as Tridecaphobia. He thought seems to have reason. He's had numerous accidents on Friday the 13th. He's had problems with anything that is labeled thirteen. He's the type that should never go on a floor numbered that because then a fire would break out. Just his luck
There are some strange fears out there and I'm sure there are reasons for them all. Might just take time to find out.

Hydrophobia has been around a long time. My father is the only one I have personally known with it but I have heard it is common.
Johnny Depp does huh? Now that's interesting. How did you find out about it?

I have two nieces one from my side who's almost 17 and one from my husbands side that is almost 19 and both have always been afraid of clowns One will even cover her head and cry till it is gone, they both get hysterical when it comes to clowns. I think it was due to the fact that both watched the move IT by Stephen King when they were very young like 2-3 years of age which I think parents shouldn't let them watch it at that age not until atleast 10-12. But their siblings tease them and chase them around even now just to aggervate them. My nephew put up a big It clown poster straight accross his doorway and my niece refused to even go in to wake him up and always faced the other direction while passing his room. And my sister in law has those cute little clowns hanging from the ceiling in her room and her daughter won't go in their. With my nephew it is spiders which they don't bother neither of my nieces. Weird huh..?

weirdly, I find deliberately scary clowns, like Pennywise, and the one in Slipknot, less scary than normal clowns.
there's something honest about a deliberately sinister clown. whearas it seems like normal clowns are trying to hide their true, scary, selves.
it's the disguising of motives and emotions.

I never liked clowns either. Not a full blown phobia or anything.
Have you ever seen Doctor Who? Sylvester McCoy's Doctor traveled with a companion named Ace who was a tough cookie and she was afraid of clowns - in this case - that was a good thing!

I'm afraid of clowns myself, not all of them, but there are some creepy looking ones. My daughter is afraid of them too, and I've had a few friends who are creeped out by them too. I don't think it's so unusual to be afraid of them now. My daughter had a clown doll that someone bought her for her birthday when she was little. She would not sleep with that thing in her room. I don't know what happened to it, but I still remember it made my skin crawl to look at it.

I think one of my kids were afraid of clowns and though I have no fear, I can see how a clown can be fearful for little kids..

Nothing comes to mind.. but I did know someone once who insisted comedy was basically evil.. I disagree, but comedy has taken a darker theme since then however!

Never scared of clowns. In fact, I've always liked them a lot.
However, I had this unexplainable phobia of the damper on our fireplace from the time that I was almost five years old until I saw it for the last time (except for in photos and home movies) when I was fourteen.
At fourteen (when I saw it uncovered for the first time in many years), I wondered what it was that I'd found so scary about it--but, then, the room's lighting shone on it a certain way that I could feel clear into my bone marrow.
So, while this feeling only lasted for a second, I knew that, at least part of the time, there was something about that damper that was definitely creepy.
What, I'm not sure...
Check out what I wrote if you haven't already...

A youngster I work with will not even look at pictures of bugs in text books or the dictionary. He gets very worked up over them. Of course he has some special needs that manifest in behaviors.

My daughter is afraid of clowns and can't even watch them on television. She covers her face when they are on the television. I'm not even sure why, as we have never went to the circus with her.

Oh my gosh! That sounds so much like my youngest daughter.
She got frightened when she was very young by a clown who
looked a lot like the ugly menacing clown in the move IT,
based on a book written by Stephen King . She is in her 30's and she is still afraid of clowns. Even the smiling McDonald clown. When she takes her 2 boys to a McDonalds for a treat (not often) she goes to one that she knows doesn't ever have one there. I did everything I could think of to help her overcome this fear but she still doesn't want one to get too close to her or her children.

Mmm...she was afraid of clowns?? Well I always remember my mother telling me how petrified she was of...are you ready? Santa Claus..especially the ones in stores at Christmas time where as a kid you can hop on his lap and tell him what you wanted for Christmas. After she told me that I kept envisioning that scene at the end of the movie A Christmas Story, where each kid upon being set upon Santa's lap would start screaming bloody murder

Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns, it is a very serious phobia, and can paralyze a person, it takes sometimes years to cure. Usually the person has to be exposed to clowns many times before they get over it. The fear is so bad it is like being afraid of monsters or things like that. The fear usually stems from childhood. Imagine a toddler exposed to this grinning big head wild haired thing come at them throwing things at the etc.
I have never met anyone in my personal life that had this fear. I only worked with one person who had a fear of buses and I got her to take buses and feel okay about it.

I'm not afraid of clowns, but I've never liked them... mimes, either.
I used to be afraid of dogs, and the dark, neither of which bother me now, though it took quite a concerted effort on my part to rid myself of these fears. I can even pet dogs, now. But I still prefer cats.

I had a room mate like this once. A dear lovely soul, but something happened to make her feel this way. Ofcourse I had a clown collection. Statues, posters, etc. She asked me to remove the laundry room picture since it scared her so much.
