We all know the US economy is in horrible shape. Gas prices, food prices, the housing market are all suffering. The amount of money spent on the war in Iraq limits the resources we have to invest in alternate fuel resoruces, and ways to improve the envirnoment.
Can the economy recover while we are still fighting in Iraq?

I have been told by an old timer that any time the economy is getting close to recession we go to war and recover from it after. Now thats just talk but I guess a little research into history might tell the tale. Once it is over if there are smart people making the deals we could walk away from Iraq, a leading producer of oil, in fairly good shape. Or am I the only cynic who believes we went for oil in the first place?

My opinion is that we will not have a recovery in the economy while we are at war, or even after the war is over (which is historically when a recovery is seen).
Did you know that this is the first war that has not been paid for as it goes along? Even the Civil War was financed by taxes.
There has been no new taxes to finance this war and in fact there has been tax cuts. The president has borrowed money from other countries to finance this war and we and our children and grandchildren will be expected to pay this money back.
Don't even get me started on the rebate checks that will soon be popping into everyones mail, more money borrowed from other countries.
How are we expected to pay this back when our jobs are leaving the country or just plain closing down.
