Do you think the subtitle is helpful?

I think it is not only useful to have the subtitle for foreign movies, but also it's good for watching from TV. As sometimes I watch TV when my child is sleeping, I will turn down the volume very low so that it won't wake up my child. Since there is subtitle, I don't have to hear from TV but understand what happens anyway.

absolutely yes. i have tv in my room, so when my husband already sleep earlier than me and i still want to watch tv program especially movie then subtitles will help me to know what the story about since the volume of tv being minimize. the problem will arise if i see local tv program which means no subtitles on there

Very true. Somehow I love the best are the subtitles for the hearing impaired. The are the most accurate & I love it when they put in the different sounds & also the lyrics of songs when there's a background song or something

I believe that subtitles are very helpful. Sometimes, actors & actresses do not speak clearly, & you can actually read what they said. Especially in China, where you have two main dialects, & then a lot of other differences in the languages depending on locations, but the written language is the same, it is VERY helpful to those who are not multi-lingual. I have also heard that actors & actresses might speak their movie lines in their own dialects when making a movie or documentary. In order to follow it, subtitles are necessary for those who are not multi-lingual. It also makes it easier to present the other countries by having subtitles in the language of the country it is being presented in. At the same time, foreign films can be shown with subtitles in various languages around the world. Sure, movies can be shown with the audio redone in other languages, but because they try to match mouth movements with the words in different languages, a lot gets cut out because of a lack of a way to match the spoken words to the mouth movements. At times, from the removal of different parts, the entire movie ends up not making any sense. Oh - yeah - the subtitles do help when you want to watch the movie without sound. You can still follow it, & understand the story or documentary.

Well - Run Run Shaw (who later became Shaw Brothers) did make a lot of great martial arts movies that are very popular in the United States. Quite often, they redo the audio by using American people to say the English lines, & they cut a lot out, because they cannot match the English to the mouth movements. When they do that, quite often, they cut out something critical, & the whole movie/story ends up not making sense. In this case, subtitles are better in that they can leave the entire movie intact. I also just found out that other countries, such as india & The Philippines, have several different languages within their lands, & in order for the entire country to watch & enjoy the movie, subtitles would be necessary.

I think it useful to have the subtitle not only for foreign movies. Like you said when you turn down the volume very low you can still understand what happens because you can read the subtitle and its good for older people or those who have hearing problems.

of course it is very helpful, take your case for example you could watch a programme and let the volume down because of the subtitles. what about people who do not understand the language or people who cannot hear. its a blessing for them they also get the oppotunity to watch and enjoy themselves. i think it is important

I am glad that the subtitle is very common today. Even it's for the news and some TV series and programs.

That depends. If I watch some foreign movies and TV series, the subtitle is definitely helpful to me. Sometimes it help me to listen to the actors. For example, if I am watching an English movie and can not listen clearly the lines of the actors, the subtitle help me to achieve that. While I watch movie or TV series in Chinese, I seldom use that. At home I do not need to turn down the volume, because the TV set is not in the bedroom. At dorm, we all use earphones. You did remind me of what my roommate's mother does. Her husband is a professor. Thus he always need a quiet environment to read. However the mother is a great fan of TV series. Then she does the same as you did. I think that's quite considerate.

Subtitles are Very important. I am a English only speaking movie lover and I need subtitles to see French or Chinese or any other language film. I prefer subtitles over dubbing English sound onto a foreign film. I love hearing the other language being spoken.

Hi youless. I find subtitles useful when I am watching a movie in foreign language that I do not understand. There are so many foreign movies that are really beautiful yet I can't understand any word they are saying but when they have English subtitles, I can then understand fully what I am watching. Just my thoughts dear friend. Take care and have a nice day.

well, subtitle is really helpful. that's the way I learned a language back then, especially english. oh yeah, I recognize some chinese characters from the subtitles on Phoenix Channels' films by the way, even when they already used Chinese language inside the film but the Chinese subtitles are still there, and I think it is helpful for me to learn the language by reading the subtitles (so I would recognize how a character was read). and yes you're right, sometimes when we need to turn off the sound volume, we can still understand the plot of the story by reading the subtitles.

Subtitles are the best. I've watched/read more movies than I can count. I usually use the subtitle function when I'm working out at the gym because my iPOD takes presidence. I also used the subtitle feature to teach my son how to read long before others his age, plus he reads so fast now because those words are only on the screen for a few seconds. I have to have it on foreign movies, I usually use all the language options so I can learn a few more key phrases for my vocab.

I used Plaza Sesamo (Sesame Street) and Dora and Blues Clues, they loved the characters and the words just followed. They can recite the words verbatem, why not be able to read them too.

I use subtitles all the time. They are very useful, especially when I'm not paying alot of attention or they have strange accents (all british programming like torchwood for example). I leave subtitles on unless they are really getting in the way or they don't do the subtitles on the show. Dan

In your situation, sub-titles appear helpful. However, if I see a movie with sub-titles, I do not enjoy it, because I think sub-titles divert my attention from the main movie. In that situation, if I have to watch a movie, I would prefer a silent movie, without any sub-titles. I am sure I can understand a silent movie with gestures made by the characters in the movie.

I guess so. But then, I easily get distructed with the subtitles when I was watching movies because I have to read them and miss out on some of the action. But still, I don't care about it. It helps when you don't understand what the actors are saying in foreign language.

it is also very helpful to me because there are some scenes that are way too fast for them to talk so sometimes i can't understand what are they're talking about so i just always ending up in rewinding that scene from time to time if there's no subtitle
