I'm using a dell right now so i'll recommend it. It's fairly keep considering its specs. And very customizable. It'll all depend on what you if it just for net surfing and some document typing a low end kind will suffice but for video editing and gaming a dedicated video card and faster CPU are important and that means more money. HP is a good brand also and have an excellent customer care service.

As far as the quality is concerned HP is the best brand ,it is also having the cheaper laptops as compared to the others like Dell and IBM.i think compaq 6409 is the best model and very much reliable so you can think of that even and it will be not too much expensive though and having nice configuration. On the other hand if you want more cheaper then you can go for the Acer laptops that are also giving the same configuration at the little cheaper rate than that of the above i discussed. So you can choose either HP or acer, both are quite good for the laptops.
Have a nice day!!
