Should children be taught a second language early in life instead of waiting until maybe high school and requiring them to learn then?

So what would that mean to other countries? It seems as though you are saying that their languages don't matter. And if you visit a different country, shouldn't you know how to communicate with them, in their language?

There is a lot to be said for teaching children a second language early in life. For one thing, it is much easier for them to absorb it at a younger age. At the high school age, I find most students are not as eager or adept at learning a new language as young children are.

You are absolutely correct, I have 2 teenagers learning 2 different languages and it is a mess, but they are doing very well.

i think it's better for children to learn a second language early in life so that they could be fluent in speaking that second language. also, they would have more time learning vocabulary and their mistakes would be easier to correct. children also absorb a language better too when taught early in life and if it is used in a conversational manner. it help to if people around them speak that 2nd language too..

Very good point and it also helps if the instructor is patient with them, but I guess they would be more patient with little ones.

hello hersheyskiss,
if you really do want your children to learn another language you should really start teaching them at a young age. while they are still young hearing people speak the language they could easily adapt to it. as a child they are at a critical age where in they are very sensitive to their environment. what they see, what they hear, touch and smell, you should take advantage of this. when people are at a young age you have to constantly feed their minds about the right things bcause the childrens minds are like sponges, they absorb information faster you might say than most adults. they should be taugh the basics like coping skills, social skills and manners so when they grow up they would learn how to be a little bit more independent and know how to do things by themselves. so yes, i do agree that children should be taught early in life.

Absolutely as soon as possible! The younger one is, the easier it is to learn -any- language. I have tutored people in ESL, & the younger they are, (more often than not) the easier they pick it up. The brain is hardwired to learn language, & -especially- when we are young. Brains tend to "fossilize" as we grow older.
Which reminds me, I need to locate a teacher of Russian, so I won't lose what I've managed to teach myself! LOL!

It would be better if they would learn a new language while they are young because there's a bigger chance for them to be proficient in that language and be able to speak like it's their native language.
