Advice needed...Please help

I have a pair of red leather boots that i want to put into a consignment shop. there are some black scuffs - looks like from tha sole of the opposite boot - on the toe of each one. i tried a pencil eraser - this works on linoleum... but that didn't work - so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated BTW - i would prefer to remove the marks, rather than cover them up...
