When was US in a depression

I'm horrible with history and economics, so forgive me for sounding stupid, but when was the last time the US was in a depression and how did we get out of it?

The Great Depression began on October 29, 1929 when the stock market crashed it is known in history as "Black Tuesday." They say the war economy of WWII onset in 1939 ended it.

Thanks. I didn't realize it was that long ago. I don't know why I was thinking it was sometime in the 1940's. Wow, 10 years! Scary
