Can you hear your heart beats in bed?

Can you hear your heart beats when you're lying in bed on the left-hand side? I can. When I was a kid, it used to scare me because I didn't know what it was. It seemed just a regular, obsessive, threatening noise. Later I realized it was my little engine pumping blood to keep me alive. Now when I hear it I'm no longer scared, but it makes me realize how many things are going on inside our bodies, things that we're not aware of most of the time.
