Most important in a relationship is communication, this is vital whether it is with your spouse, significant other, or colleages at work etc.
We really should talk more about how we feel, what we want out of life, work, school etc. It helps to build on a relationship.
If it is in a romantic relationship then communication will highlight any problems before they become insurmountable. But such discussion must be free and open. Each person must feel able to express themselves without fear of reprisal.
This really must be top of the list.

I'd say my own 10 ideas are as follows...
1. Learn effective communication and let the other person say what's on their mind, accept it and don't criticise or judge how they say they are feeling.
2. Allow one another personal space, as this let's the other partner pursue their own interests and grow.
3. Always make up a disagreement as quickly as possible.
4. As well as allowing one another personal space, have lots of quality time together doing things you both enjoy.
5. Before committing to a serious relationship, make sure you are friends first and foremost, and both looking down the same path of life. Discuss the things which really matter, such as whether you want children or not, and you have to both be in total agreement on such issues.
6. Never criticise your partner in public, and when alone, discuss what's upsetting you about him/her in a gentle and loving, rather than an accusing way.
7. Remember to let your partner know how much you love them, and remember that actions speak just as loud.....sometimes louder....than words. Let your partner show you how much he or she loves you in his/her own way. To demand, for instance, that your partner says "I love you" when they find that a very difficult thing to do, just puts unfair pressure on them. If they do love you but can't say the words, he or she will show it in other ways.
8. Never nag.....accept sometimes that it isn't the end of the world if your partner won't help with the washing-up, burns the toast or whatever. If these issues cause major rows, it might be worth looking at undealt with underlying tensions.
9. Never bring past disputes into current ones. Just deal with the issue of the moment.
10. If the relationship appears to be going wrong, yet both parties want to save it, do seek help in the form of couple-counselling.
