What is with the condition of roads these days?

I'm not sure how it is round the world, but here in England the state of the roads is getting to be pretty poor. It makes me wonder why we are so happily paying our taxes, when it doesn't seem that they are being spent in areas where it is needed.
I have lost count of how many pot-holes, cracks and crevasses there are in the road in our town. It is most frustrating to be trundling along and then have to swerve to miss a hole, or drive over a hole and wonder if I've done damage to my car.
With so much traffic on the roads it is a concern which is not going to go away, it is only going to get worse.
Looking forward to hearing your opinions, especially if you are encountering the same problems, or am I alone with my complaints?

hello icegueen123,
i feel for you, i do think the same way when i am still living in some parts of asia i dont get it when the government ask for so much tax payment when they dont really take care of the roads (i feel it is important as it is the means of transporting goods as well as humans)
the best road i have ever been is US (just the places i have been) and singapore. they are well maintained but i guess singapore is an exemption since it is a very tiny country but hey at least the government uses the tax payment wisely.
btw, when i was living in the philippines they keep fixing the road every year during rainy season (yeah how stupid is that) and they will do that over and over again and it was just a waste of money and work loads. government there sucks big time and corrupt as well. so compared to that your place is heaven
anyway, im sure you are not alone and there are so many out here who have worst scenario than yours.
hopefully one of these days, government will truly care about the country and not their pocket and selves.
takecare and have a good one!

It does seem that corruption in the government is one of the factors. We pay so much in taxes, but don't see much in the way of results, it doesn't seem fair.
How stupid to repair during rainy season! They didn't think that through did they.
Thanks for your response.

yea, corruption plays such a huge role on one country's performance. i hate i t and i wish they dont have to make the tax payers suffer so much for their own sake.
oh, they think it so well to do all the repair during the rainy season, they cared so much on how much money they can get so it is well thought (the longer they stayed and delayed it the more money they can keep). despite all the rallies and complaints they still manage to do the same for so many years.
oh well, i hope there is a way to make things right in an instant but it is just a wishful thinking i guess not unless we will all start to just few human left in this world, then maybe that would work (maybe!)
takecare!

I hate the way that when they do get around to doing repairs, there are always lots of men stood around doing nothing.
This happened to me this morning, there were traffic lights sets up for road works during rush hour. As I drive through the lights there are three men stood, drinking coffee, and no men working as far as I could see.
They could have at least waited until after rush hour!
Take care.

Perhaps when they have finished the major highway, they might start on some of the other roads. We often find that once they finish repairing a major road, it takes so long that they need to start again.
Thanks for the response.
