If a spider comes into your house, do you kindly catch it and throw it out? Or..

Do you squash it, stamp it with your foot or a book or whatever is close at hand?
I am petrified of spiders, but will allow no one to kill one, insisting that it is bad luck, and I have always said that it is bad luck for as long as I could remember, there is even a rhyme that I say and it goes, "If you wish to live and thrive, Let the spider run alive". Well the other day my son asked me "Why is it bad luck to kill a spider?" I did not have a clue, and so I went ahunting on the internet and I came up with it being bad luck because, they are a sign of good luck and fortune, and I even saw the rhyme I had in my head there!!
In fact there are many reasons not to kill a spider and I found them on this website and it is really quite interesting:
www.spiderzrule.com/superstitions.htm
If you get chance and are interested, take a look, it is really interesting.
Oh, and I never actually throw them out, I get my eldest to do the honours for me, I am not that brave!!

if they are close to the window we shove them outside otherwise we just squash them. I know spiders are important to catch flies, etc. Thanks for the site I will check it out.

I just don't like harming living creatures unnecessarily, so I always catch them (using a glass and a piece of paper) and let them out.

LOL poor rose! We used to get THE biggest spiders you have ever seen running across the wooden floor in the living room and I would shriek at the size and speed of them although I am not generally scared of them! I never usually kill them cos I think it is cruel when it is so easy to put them safely outside but if they were quick and I couldn't get it out I would splat them with a shoe - it was better than watching the cat chew it then spit it out! xxx

I had never heard the bad luck thing. That is interesting. My daughter is horribly afraid of spiders. This comes after her cousin spent time in the hospital for a brown recluse bite. If she sees one it a panic attack. Screaming crying, hyper ventilating. So if it is she and I I usually kill it.

Ugh! I checked out the website and couldn't finish reading it because that picture made my spine twitch like a leaf in the wind. I hate spiders. They terrify me. They give me the willies and make my shiver with fear. I didn't know they were supposed to be good luck if they are in your house. Great! Ugh! I have to admit that I kill them if I find them in my house. That is, if I can get to it without a doubt that it won't get on me. If it is on a wall or the ceiling, I will have my hubby take care of it for me because, I will surely miss and it will jump on me and bite me and maybe kill me instead. But, maybe now I will have my hubby catch it and take it outside...far away from the house. But, just so you know...I hate spiders. This entire discussion has me twitching and scratching and certain that one is crawling around on my head in my hair. Thanks! I needed a severe case of the creeps at 10 am! LOL!

Yeah the pictures were a bit graphic, do not know why they had to use so many. I just thought it might be interesting for people to see the different superstitions attached to them!! Sorry if I have given you the creeps for the day now!

LOL! I have no idea why they had to use some many and, I stopped after the first one because it creeped me out way to much. LOL!
I am getting over the creeps though, so...apology accepted! LOL!
And, it was interesting...of what I read. Sorry I couldn't read any further. I knew my fear of spiders was bad but, until that site...I didn't know just how bad it was. For me not to be able to continue to read on even though I was under no threat of a spider at all, speaks volumes about my fear. LOL!

No way would i ever intentionally kill a spider Rose,But lol i wouldnt pick it up and take it outside either. If we get one indoors hubby usualyy gets the dustpan out and sweeps it gently into the pan and then we put it outside. The big ones you get in the bath are a nightmare!!but i try to let threm go down the plughole.I trry having a chat with them, warning them of the impending rush of hot water!!!!...Im hte same with most insects...woodlice are a great favourite of mine...I should start a Save the woodlice fund!!..if im washing the kitchen floor one will often totter in front of me...and I tell it to run and go underneath the washing machine, where its safe!!..daft isnt it reaqlly, but just the way we are made...

Yes I always save woodlice too, I do not actually mind them when they are one alone. But when there is a nest of them it is gross and they have to fend for themselves!

mm..i will definitely catch it and throw it out.. guess what, the liquid which comes out when u stamp a spider can cause allergies and related reaction..so its better to catch him and gently put him out..

I am very scared of large spiders (can cope with smaller ones), but I never kill them. I grit my teeth, wait until they are still, then trap them in a glass. I then turn the glass upright - the spider can't crawl up the inside of the glass...it keeps slipping down to the bottom as its legs have nothing to grip onto. I then open a window or a door, and tip the spider outside.
I don't think I do that because of the bad luck thing re: killing spiders - I think I do it partly because I'm a softie and hate to kill anything, and partly because though I have a terror of spiders, those you find in the UK are harmless and they are good for the environment in the sense that they keep the population of flies under control.
I've no idea where my fear of spiders came from, as nobody in my family is scared of them in the slightest.
I'll have a look at that link you provided....sounds interesting!

Don't think I could cope with living in a country where they have dangerous spiders, or house spiders that are bigger than ours. Strangely though I quite like the huge furry tarantulas and have handled one and it was very friendly. It could be that because they are furry, they seem more like a cute little animal - daft, I know LOL. It's just those huge ones we get in our houses in Brit-land that do my head in, though if I lived somewhere like Australia I'd be walking around in a constant state of terror of funnel-web spiders.

Although I have never heard of it being bad luck to kill a spider (of course that is relative, to the spider it would be immensely bad luck), I could never kill one. I always scoop them up onto a sheet of paper and carry them outside and wish them merry well on their way. Okay! Except for the one morning when I went to step into the shower and there was a spider bigger than the drain standing over the drain! I am telling you that this spider was big enough to have rented the cabin we lived in! I screamed like a girl and said there was not enough room for that spider and I both to live in the same space. My partner did not carry it out as gently on the bottom of her shoe as I carry mine out on the paper but I swear...it was HUGE!

We didn't by any chance have the same great-grandmother did we? LOL
For as far back as I can remember I heard it was bad luck to kill a spider as well and that saying started with my great-grandmother...to this day I won't kill one either...unlike you I'm not scared of spiders though. If I see one I'll gently pick it up and put it in one of my plants. I think there really must be something about spiders being good luck ...it never fails...if I see some in my home the next day I get good news that one of my articles has been accepted and to be paid for it..sooooooo??????

Well I think my knowledge of it came from grandparents, I have a vague memory of staying with my grandma and grandad once and killing a spider, and my grandma told me off and said it was bad luck. I think that day everything went wrong and I never killed once since.
I could not pick one up they are horrible, but I will not kill one.

I hope no one thinks I sound mean for doing this but I have 2 frogs and I just catch them and feed them to my frogs. Naturally if they were in the wild they would eat the spiders and if my frogs ran free they would just catch them on their own anyways so I see it as kind of doing what would happen in nature. I'm scarred of larger spiders but those are the ones my frogs love most so I suck it up and catch them and just toss them in with my giant frogs. Sometimes the spider might escape and vanish into the house never to be seen again, but usually the frogs are quick to spot them when they are climbing back up the glass to get out.

I have this century old bookshelf in the room , yes u can say its antique, and i find antique stuff very mysterious as how they look, dimensions and stuff. as how mysterious as it is it brought out a spider once while i was listening to music, the vibration of the sound from the loud music must have brought it out and it moved as i tried to move to get rid of it so what i did instead since i think it was looking at me, with its 8 eyes I'm sure it has a lock on me on at least one of those sniper scopes, i called someone else to get rid of it and it worked..i try not to think of spiders after i saw the movie "Eight Legged Freaks"
