Ever tried to outstare your cat?

It may sound a rather odd thing to do, but hav eyou ever tried to outstare your cat? I've tried it with both the dogs and the cats. The dogs look away really quickly, but the cats stare right on back at me. Nine times out of ten it's me who blinks and looks away first, but occassionally one of them looks bored and just goes back to sleep. It's as if they're saying just how boring this game is! So, have you tried it? Who won? .... Or have you got better things to do with your time?!!

As far as the dog is concerned, it's a pack thing. You are the dog's pack leader and by staring at him, you are asserting your dominant position as pack leader. If your dog stared back, he'd be trying to challenge you for the position of pack leader. Cats are not pack animals but they have there own social structure and staring is one of the ways in which a cat can assert its position in the social structure. The first one to look away is acknowledging that it's the social inferior of the other cat.

Good luck with that I think that it was Winston Churchill who said "Dogs look up to us, cats look down on us and pigs treat us as equals"

So I'm the cat's social inferior? Hmmm, we'll have to do something about that!

Besides having a practice. I also have big round eyes. I think that scares them.

Hahaha actually yes I have. I have tried to outstare my kitty, but sadly she lost. She turned her head away or sometimes I blinked so we both win and lose.

Yes, I have tried it with one of my cats. I won. She looked down almost immediately, like she didn't understand what I was doing. They don't have a mother cat to teach them how to do things, and maybe this is one of those things.

I doubt that outstaring humans is one of the first things that a mother cat thinks of when she's making her list of things to teach the kittens!

With dogs, staring is a sign of agression. Poor thing is probably wondering what she's done wrong this time!

Yeah. we have a cat at home and I stare the cat directly to its eye. as you said, cats really stare you until you scare them away. When I am doing it, I am telling something to the cat through my mind (as if it really transmit). but, i enjoy it sometimes. lol.
@GreenMoo (11833)

So, did the cat get what you were trying to transmit? When they do it in reverse & stare at me, I reckon they're trying to always transmit the same message - FOOD!!!

I think that may be a wee bit freaky Moo!!...the cats that i know would just stare on!!...and sometimes an unblinking stare can be a bit unnerving.

I don't do this on a regular basis but my partner used to give our cat Nigel 'the look'. It was little game they played and it took ages until I actually believed it was real. What happened was my partner would go and stand next to Nigel and stare down at him and give him a 'look'. Nigel instantly ran outside as soon as he saw this! It was amazing. He did it on demand. They also used to play a game where if Nigel would sneak into the house past Adrian without Adrian knowing, he would get snuggles the couch and lots of attention. If Adrian caught him he would chase Nigel out of the house and Nigel would keep trying until he got in!

Staring is a type of challenge among animals. Looking another in the eye is a form of non-verbal aggression. The one who looks down or away is considered to be the submissive one. Dogs alway look away when their owner stares because in their little pack system the human is the leader. Cats are solitary creatures and rarely back down or recognize unenforced authority. Unfortunately a cat will never be submissive. It will either be dominant or run away and always be afraid if you enforce your authority physically. Kind of the charm of cats actually. Dan

You're right there - my cats don't recognise any sort of authority! Which is probably why I think they're such fabulous animals. I do find them so much more interesting that the dogs. Thanks for your reply. Even though it has a sensible explanation, trying to outstare your cat is rather fun ;-)
