I have a 1 year and 2 month old cat. I can tolerate almost anything he does. The one thing he does that is driveing me nuts and I'm not happy w/ he is jumping on my counters and I can't get him to stop. He always has plenty of food and water I give him attention but he keeps jumping on my counters. Does anyone know how I can get him to stop?

my cat does it all the time. but when i see him on the counter, i just tell him to get down and he gets down. animals are just restless and snoopy. they enjoy going through my stuff, all the rooms, counters, cupboards, closets, etc; they are like private investigators, meticulously searching for something, which i am not sure what it is. i dont think they know either. they are just bored, like kids. once i accidentally left the cupboard opened, and my cat was standing on the counter, moving his head right and left as he looking inside the counter, searching for something.
maybe buy him some toys or climbing cat things or scratch boards...just stuff to occupy his time. animals are like restless kids. if they can talk, they would be whining, "i am bored" and "nothing to do here."
my cat's favorite toys are his scratch boards and pole, as well as window seats. right now, he is sitting on the table by my printer, sleeping in front of me. 30 minutes ago, he jumped on my lap and sat in front of the computer, staring at the screening like he is reading what i typed. i thought it was boring and jumped down.

maybe he suffers from anxiety loneliness syndrome when you leave him alone at home. my late dogs used to create a mess when i leave...pieces of kleenex, napkins or toilet paper scattered on the floor, as well as all their toys. my late cat used to chew on anything that smells like me to get me back for leaving. that is why i started to talk to them before i leave to let them know that i will be out and return soon so that they dont worry or get scared, kind of like reassure them that it will be ok. and i started giving the dogs treats they can be busy chewing on if they get bored. keep them busy.

Yes he did miss me for the second I'd walk in the door he followed me every where I'd go for a while til he knew I was staying put and not going any where. He knew when I put my shoes on at night to head of to work that I was leaving him and he would act up and I then knew to put anything he would shred up this included toilet papaer, paper towels, ect. He has done better since I have done this and leave his cat toys out on the floor where he can get to those instead for chewing and scratching on. Thank for the response and take care. :)

He is a funny one I tell ya for he will get up into the cupboards that are above the stove and the one's above the counter. I can tell for I always keep them closed and when I come home from work they are opened along w/ a couple of drawers. I have come home to find the toilet paper shredded as well so that has to be put up as well. He is getting better about doing these things and there not happening as much anymore just the jumping on the counter is still happing alot it seems. I just have to get out of my chair he'll hear me and jump down and i'll say "stay off the counter go find mousey". He has a bunch of little stuffed mouses that he love's to play w/ and I'll get the laser pointer light and let him chase that he loves it can do it for hours on end. He is a funny cat I will say that. Thanks for your response and take care.

First realize that this is what cats do and love...I have 4 cats, each has her/his own personality but the one thing they all have is their love of climbing onto the highest places...Talk to your cat...believe it or not they are like dogs, they understand...when I say no (to them climbing on my dining room table) he or she or they immediately get off!! Get yourself a squirt bottle and fill it with water, believe me, even though I give my cats baths, they hate water and so this bottle thing works! Try it and good luck! Hope your cat is as happy as mine are!! My kiddies are second only to my daughters!! I also have a pitt bull!! (No problem with the kiddies, she loves cats, just have to be careful cause she doesn't kmow how big she is or how strong...so I'm watchful.

I do talk to him all the time he know's when I mean buisness such as when he jumps on the counter I will say in a firmer voice "stay off the counter". I bought him one of those cat trees that go from floor to ceiling he loves it. he will run up and down that all the time.
I think he just likes to see how far he can get away w/ the counter bit but it won't be far at all. Thanks for the response and take care.

Get a spray bottle and fill it with water. Every time you see the cat on the counter spray it with the water he will jump down right away as cats usually don't like water. Just keep doing it every time and he will get the hint.

I was doing that for a while and he still get's up there. It seems all I have to do is now is just get out of my chair he hears me and will jump down. I don't have anything on my counters I keep them clear of food and anything else that he would want to get into up there. The only thing he is going to find up there is the taoster, coffee pot, blender, and the glass sugar jar wich has a clasp lock on it. I don't know w/ him he's just curiouse I guess lol. Thanks for the response and take care.

It is a matter of constant discipline/training. Every time you catch him on the counter you need to get his attention and VERY FIRMLY say "NO" then give him plenty of affection when he gets down. To get his attention, the spray bottle of water poster #1 mentioned is a good idea. Also you can use a metal can filled with a handful of marbles or gravel. Shake it loudly so it startles him and say NO at the same time. He will learn that he is not allowed up there. Just don't leave any food he might like on the counter when you leave or go to bed. Don't be surprised if he sneaks up when you aren't there, but he will know that it's a bad thing and will not do it in front of you.
Neither of my cats jump on the counters, even when they are stalking a mouse. We trained them early on.
Yours is still young enough to learn.
Good luck with your kitty.

I do that and it's like he's playing games w/ me to see how far he can push it and what I am going to do lol. All I really have to do now is get out of my chair he hears me and jumps down. He is very snaeky about to but will be heard for he has a lillte bell on his blue collar so I can hear where he is at and what he is up to. Thanks for the response and take care.
