Best Way To Remove Chewing Gum From Hair

What's the best way to remove gum from hair? I heard mayonnaise helps, but I am afraid to hurt my Lhasa Apso's coat. Any suggestions?

anything oil based. Baby oil, peanut butter, olive oil. How long has it been in there? If it is really matted you may have to cut it out. Let me know if you were successful.
