What type of dog should i get

The shelter is always a good place to start. The staff should be able to pick out dogs that would be a good match for you and your circumstances. But keep in mind that many of the small dogs are not as calm as they appear to be, there are lots of small dogs that are really active and require a lot of exercise. So you should take a moment and figure out what you are hoping out of a dog and what you can offer to a dog so you have a better idea what you can get. Personally I like most spaniels and retrievers, happy active and outgoing dogs that love everyone, both dogs and people. My current cavalier king charles spaniel is a perfect match for me. He's superfriendly, small and quite easily trained, not to mention just beautiful when he's finally getting the adult coat in. The only downside with him that I notice is that he sheds a lot so I have to brush him every day and vacuum the house several times a week.

Go to the local animal shelter and pick a friendly dog

I am retired and have a Chuhuahua, got him second hand so he was pretty much trained. He goes with me almost everywhere and the lonngest he hasn't been with me was when I was in the hospital for three days. I kenneled him since I figured they would see he got some attention, However you should get a larger dog, one who will run along with you and play frisbee since your a young man.
