Pet Rocks...

Recently I came across an article about how pet rocks are making a comeback. A pet rock is basically a rock that you get out of your yard, paint some eyes on and then pretend it’s like a person. Some ppl go to the extreme of gluing on hair, making hands and feet, making clothes for them and creating whole families and homes for them. I never got into the whole pet rock craze. I was more into Barbie.
Did you ever have pet rocks? Do you still? Do you think they are making a comeback? Would you start making them?

Do you have a picture of it, so we can all see how cute it is?

Oh wow that is so cool, I used to have pet rocks!!I forgot all about them!! I was an only child so I used to make these little friends and do not laugh but we used to play monopoly together and everything, I know, now I sound really sad but it was hard being an only child!!
Right, now I am off into my back garden to hunt some rocks down to make some, because I know for a fact that my 6 year old son will absolutely love this, he likes his little friends too, thanks so much for reminding me about a great idea for a weekend activity!!!

My sons best friend was the tree outside of grans house when he was younger! lol he used to go out there and tell it all his secrets and play around it! lol Kids have great imaginations and there is nothing sad about that! xx

Oh man, it has been a long time since I thought about pet rocks. My friend gave me one she had purchased from a store. It already had eyes glued to it, along with green hair. I really didn't know what to do with it. I mean it can come in handy when you want to stone somebody, but I think stoning when out centuries ago. : )

LOL A pet rock sounds like a great idea - no crying to get in and out or glaring at you if you refuse to keep the window open for them in the cold weather, no having to buy pet food or expensive visits to the vet! i think I will tell my daughter about this when we get to the summer break from school - I wonder if she will fall for it and it will keep her amused for a while! xxx

I never had a pet rock. I couldn't understand why these people paid for a rock. And yes I remember when they were sold in stores for you to buy and give a good home too.
I can't believe they are making a comeback but then it seems like everything from back then is. I go into the stores and I have flashbacks to when I was a kid . So why not pet rocks? I swear though I won't be buying them.

I remember that they sold pet rocks in the stores too. Yes, I had one but it was store bought...I wasn't that creative to make my own.
I am so glad that you gave me this idea. I run a daycare and it would be a fun project for the kids this summer.

I'll have to remember to post a photo.
Last summer they went out and found big rocks and just painted them....I didn't even think about the pet rock.
thanks for the idea.

That craze was memorable. I like to collect smooth oval rocks and paint on them, but we have a neighbor who displays her rock paintings on community property, which I think is way tacky. If she were a better artist I might think differently, lol. She should display pet rocks instead. They are more innocuous.

I was really not ever into pet rocks, but perhaps it would be a good idea. Either that or a slinky. Something I could throw down the stairs or yell at without fear of repercussion. LOL.

This is news to me, I didn't know they were coming back until now. I never did the pet rock thing. There are some positives about that though. Cheaper than a real animal, yet still a conversation piece, you know?
Also you can use up anything you have around the house to give them features, hair, clothes, etc. Could be a recycling element to it.
Should be interesting to read the comments you get. Take care

I think my older brother bought me one when I was a pre-teen. It came in a box with a little house or next or something, I can't remember. But it was just a rock!
I think all of that sort of thing comes around again eventually - the pet rock, wishnick troll dolls, mood rings, chia pets.
And don't forget slinky and the hoola hoop!

I didn't have a pet rock..but I don't remember them having eyes. I did have an invisible pirana. Half of the fun was the booklet that came with the history and care of your particular pet.

I heard talk about pet rocks as a kid but I didn't realize that they were a real thing until about 5 years ago. People actually bought/buy rocks...
I have painted rocks before but not to keep as "pets".
My father in law has a pretty cool book with rock painting ideas in it. He paints with the grandkids.
I am thinking of finding some larger stones to paint with the kids this summer.
