Choke it Down

About 15 years ago my sister and I were of course living with our parents, and I was about 12 years old, my sister 14. My parents had bought a gallon of ice cream, and I had had a bowl and loved it. My sister said she didn't want any and that it sounded gross. So the next day I was so looking forward to finishing the little remaining ice cream, as I had had just one bowl the day before. Well, my sister then insisted she wanted the ice cream, even though she had said the day before she probably wouldn't like it. My mom was of course fair, and let her have it. She ate two spoonfuls before saying it was gross and disgusting and she didn't want to finish it. I looked at her and pretty much growled, "Choke it down." And she did.
So tonight I'm eating black eyed peas for dinner, and suddenly they don't look good to me anymore. I have something for a snack tonight, but I don't want to eat it now because I'll just get hungry later. So I debated, forget about it and be really hungry, or choke it down and risk getting sick. I choked it down and I feel fine now. By the way, I will be able to get more food later, it's just that my check has not come yet. I'm not going to worry unless it doesn't show up tomorrow. : )
So when you have food in front of you, are there circumstances you choke it down even thought you don't want to eat it? Say you are a guest of someone and you don't want to be rude, but... Or you are a parent and your child makes you a special 'concoction?' Kind of like when I made my mom peanut jello when I was five. She choked it down too.

oh i remember one incident when i was undergoing treatment for my nose bleeding problem. i was restricted from eating normal diet, i mean all i had for three months were boiled rice with boiled veg. and nothing more!
apart from that there was one medicine which had a very strange taste that remained in my mouth for about an hour! uggh...i cab still remember its taste. i think it must have tasted like vehicles lubricant!!
i had to take it twice a day!! i had to take that for three months.

PEANUT JELLO!! wow. I do not even think I want to know. I will, as a guest, choke down a small portion of almost anything. Sometimes I learn to like it. I was made to eat a few things as a child, and sometimes it was all that we had to eat, so I had to. I hope your check has now arrived. I like black eyed peas, but I do not like feeling like I HAVE to eat something, or go hungry.

LOL--I never in my life heard that expression "choke it down" but yes, I think most of my childhood I had to choke it down with my food...you see my great-grandmother was THE cook of the house..she could cook anything, and I mean anything. Fortunately I must have inherited her skills for cooking cause I sure as heck didn't inherit my grandmother's or mother's...uh, let's put it this way, both of them could burn water...LOL. Most times my mother just popped in frozen TV dinners..but when she decided to really cook from scratch...watch out. Let's put it this way once more...it was delightful eating foods in varying shades of grey and black as she always burned everything. Yeesh

Wow, you got me there with the peanut jello, what did you do, add peanuts to some jello? Your mom was brave..
I have been fortunate enough so far to not be in a situation where I was a guest and something terrible was placed in front of me. And by the time my kids start experiencing with making something in the kitchen it turns out..So I guess I have never had to, "choke it down" before..(I still have a 5 y/o, oh no, I hope he doesn't get any ideas.. )

When my son was six he made me breakfast in bed for Mother's Day and put sour cream on my bagel instead of cream cheese. It was truly disgusting but I choked it down to avoid hurting his feelings. I couldn't wait for him to leave the room so I could wrap it up in a napking and throw it away!

You make me laugh, AmbiePam. Thanks. Yes, I have choked something down many times in my life. My mom was the type that would not let us up from the table until our plate was clean. I have also eaten something to keep from hurting a person's feelings. And I am a mom, so I suppose I will probably have the occassional peanut jello to deal with.

Well my sister in law is a gourmet cook...and sometimes you have to choke it down. Once we were there and we sat down to eat salad..so she brings out this bowl of cherry tomatoes swimming in some sort of vinegar sauce and served it with some crusty bread (the bread was very good)..my little sister and I kept waiting for the lettuce but the tomatoes was the salad...then she served stuffed green peppers....and peppers disagree with me so much I was up half the night! But she is a sweetheart and so you choke it down and say....my that was tasty! Can't wait to see what we have tomorrow night.....by the way....when my brother comes to our houses and eats simple stuff like roast he almost licks the pans clean! LOL

I absolutely hated mashed potatoes as a kid. My mom would always put some on my plate though. She was of the opinion that, if you ate it once you like it. I would get myself extra napkins and spit all my potatoes into them. If I ran out of napkins I would choke down the two bites that were left with a big gulp of my drink.
I will take very small portions of foods if I don't know whether or not I will like them. That way I only have to take a couple of bites.
So far my kids haven't made me anything crazy. They are pretty good cooks. My youngest daughter does like to "share" soggy cheetos and oreos though. It grosses me out so bad. There is no way I could choke that down! So I divert her to daddy! He'll do it even if it gags him.
I don't make my kids choke down anything. If they don't like something they don't have to eat it. I have seen my 10 year old son throw up because he was trying to choke down food he didn't like. He wouldn't tell us, he would just try to eat it. He feels really bad when he doesn't like something and that makes me feel bad!

I always try what's on my plate. If I don't like it, then I go without. I'm not going to eat something I don't like just for the sakes of not hurting someones feelings. being honest is who I am, so I'm the same with my food. I at least try it.

I would always try to eat it at least some of it as I would not want to upset anyone and hurt their feelings
I like to eat and there is not much out there that I dislike and I am always one for trying it before I make a decision as to whether it is ok

As a child my Mum used to do me some really horrible meals if I did not eat it then I would be in trouble, so I used to get a glass of water, and use it to swallow the food down without tasting it. Of course once I left home I would only eat food that I wanted to eat and I have never changed, if I do not like a meal that is put in front of me, I will not eat it no matter what, I really would rather go hungry!!

yep when the soup has a burned taste, I cannot afford to waste food, so I just choke it down. I have to say that it is not very appetizing that way at all.

I remember one time coming to visit my family. I ate at everyone's house that I visited that day. By time I was at the last house in the evening, I was barely choking down the food, although it did taste good. My aunt ask why I wasn't eating seconds and when I told her what I had already eaten, she said I could have just said something. LOL What a shy child I was!

My parents experienced the great depression and had to go hungry many times, so they impressed upon us that we should never waste food. My dad also thought that food was better than medicine, so he always wanted us to eat large portions. I never had trouble eating something I liked, but if Mom made something I didn't like, it would take me a long time to eat it, and I would sit there trying to keep it down.
I hardly ever force myself to eat anything I don't feel like eating now, thought I seldom waste food. I'll take a small portion of something, and that way if I don't care for it, I don't have a lot of it to eat.

When my kids were young, I choked down some pretty darn horrible breakfasts and desserts. It would have been more painful to hurt their feelings. Also at other peoples homes, I always choke it down even if I don't like it. It is how I was raised. I work 2nd shift and I know that if i skip lunch, I may get very hungry later on. There may be no breaks on my shift and there even if there is they are little breaks and not enough time to actually eat a meal. I do make sure I eat something substantial before going into work.

Peanut Jello, I have never heard of that one.. I can imagine that you had to "choke it down".. I have had a few times that I have wanted something "really good" so badly but didn't know what it was.. Also quite a few times that I had dinner and all of a sudden it turned on me somehow, I just couldn't seem to eat it, but I had to or go hungry.. Now I just try and stay away from foods that I don't get along with and try to keep only the ones that I like.. I do not like bologna or eggs, but hubby thinks the world will end if we do not have bologna and eggs in the house.. A few times that was my only choices, so I made scrambled eggs and since I love onions in anything, I put onions in the scrambled eggs and they tasted just fine after that.. Hope you get groceries tomorrow, no one should have to go without.. Good luck and God Bless..

i like pretty much everything, so i think i couldn't ever be in such circumstances, but if i were i would ask if i could go to the toilet en spit it out there, and then say i felt really sick and i was afraid of throwing up.
