Oh, there's only one food that's better than freshly baked bread, I think you can guess which one. ;) My Sister-in-law (Mr.Tingywinkle) makes her own bread in a bread maker, it's lovely, she made banana bread last time, it was lovely, but the best thing is the smell, I think I might start making my own bread actually, I did it when I was at school and thoroughly enjoyed it, it's good to take frustrations out on when you knead it. :)

Ah! CHOCOLATE! Do I detect a chocolate fixation in this family?

No. I wouldn't know where to start. I don't like machines so if I did it, I would do it all by hand I think. My mum was supposed to be teaching me how to make pies and she hasn't yet so I can bake a Victoria sponge, or variation of, with the help of my 6 year old son and that's about all for now. I don't really have the time to make my own bread anyway!

I'll teach you how to make pies and stuff bab, I know how to bake and make stuff, it's only the timing I get wrong, but you'd get that right so I think we'd make a good team. :)

I love the smell of homemade bread. I have a bread machine and usually only get around to making 1 loaf a week in it. I do at times make huge batches of bread by hand. With the holidays coming my house will always smell like a bakery.

We do have a bread machine. But we don't use it as often as we really should. It does make wonderful bread. Though we can't figure out to not have the big hole in the bottom from the turner.

You can't avoid the hole if you let the bread machine do it all. However, you can use the machine just to make the dough and then put it in tins and bake it conventionally. That saves quite a bit of time and cooking time is only 20-30 mins.

I rate posts in my discussions, too.
Here's a good page on making bread: http://www.botham.co.uk/seed/bread1.htm

I have a bread machine and sometimes use it - especially if we have a party and need rolls. As I'm at home most days, I really should make bread more!

I don't know where you are and what the relative prices of flour and bread are but in the UK, buying the ingredients and making bread works out at around half the price of shop bread. It's nicer, though, and I always find it goes in half the time (!) so I suppose it probably works out at about the same in the end!

Really, they are so quick to make, too. There is nothing nicer with soup or for breakfast! Would you like to share your recipe?

Easier, yes! Isn't just the SMELL of home-made bread enough to make you want to bake it once in a while?

I don't make it very often but occasionally I do. I don't use a bread making machine because I find it makes the bread too heavy. I use a small loaf tin and add things like chopped ham and parsley. It makes the bread a lot more interesting and if the bread doesn't come out exactly as planned, at least the interesting flavour saves it!

Making bread is one of the easiest things. It is important to use the right flour, though. A 'strong' flour is needed. Using dried yeast, which is now quite widely available, also makes things a lot easier. You need a warm place in order to make the bread rise.

Thanks for replying! Do you have a machine or do you knead the dough by hand?
