First, learning to play guitar or any instrument is a noble ambition. You will be learning for the rest of your life. To answer your question with any accuracy it is necessary to have a little more information. How old are you? What kind of music do you like, and how much money do you have to spend on the instrument? I will try to give you a few general things you should know. A guitar has six strings, a body, a bridge, a head, a neck and a nut. The strings stretch from the bridge, over a piece called a saddle, down the neck over the nut and attach at the head using the tuning keys. The distance between the strings and the neck is called the action. Poorly made, inexpensive (cheap) guitars typically have a poor action. This means the strings are high above the neck and very difficult to hold down. This condition is probably the number one reason for beginners to quit playing, it makes your fingers hurt quite quickly. It is better to buy a better grade of instrument (one where the action can be adjusted) than a cheap guitar. Trust me, this is important! For a little background, I have been playing for over forty five years and I learn something new every day and I still would not consider myself an accomplished musician. If you care to respond I will try to help you further.

I'm 15 years old, and I like rock music/alternative music. I'm willing to spend at least 200-300 dollars on an instrument. I really want to learn to play the electric guitar, and I found that i really like the Gibson SB guitars. I don't want to get an acoustic guitar, because I don't really want to learn with one of those, and I don't want to spend money on an acoustic guitar that i might not even use later on. I don't know if the classes will allow me to have an electric guitar, but thats fine with me. I just have always wanted to learn to play, and now i'm getting a chance too.

Ok. I'm with you now. I believe you mean the Gibson SG. My grandson has one and it is a fine instrument however it is not in your price range. The Gibson SG starts at around $700 and goes up considerably from there. I believe Epiphone has one that is similar that might be in your price range. You will need a practice amp and for the type of music you are interested in I would suggest a Line 6 Spider III 15. This amp is 15 watts with built in effects (6) and is only $99 bucks. The Line 6 Spider series amps are the number one selling amps in their price range for rock music in the world. Get a Live Wire or Monster cable to connect the two and you're good to go. (These cables have a lifetime replacement guarantee). Another great gadget you may want to invest in is a digital tuner. There are a bunch of them out there so get one you can afford. Lots of luck and have fun!

I feel it's my duty to pass on what I've learned on guitar to everyone I can because I feel my method is "THE BEST". No.1 I was first told by an older mentor whose mother is a guitar/music teacher in a school that you absolutely want to start out on an acoustic guitar, not an electric. No.2 find some of your favorite music on cd,dvd,tape,radio,and/or satellite and play along with it searching up "ONE" string for common notes to the particular song. email me after you've done that.

You are like me, I know nothing about guitars and I help a musician, he has so many guitars, I didn't know there was so many, I still can't tell the difference between a guitar and a bass, I think it depends if you want to learn acoustic, electric, and I think a lead guitar is different again, there are a lot of different types..good luck to you i hope you do well...
