Large Car or Small Car

Do you own a large car or a small car? Would you change it if gas prices, gas mileage or safety features improved? Why did you buy that car in the first place?

I have a minivan, that is a large car. I got it because I needed more of a car. I have to say that now that it is 9 yrs old and the price of gas is double I sometimes wish I had a smaller car, but I can't afford it.

I know, people seem to want a smaller car, but because of the economy, they can't buy one. And, some people really need to have a large vehicle. I know someone who has a family of 6 and drives one of those SUVs that fit 7 people. They just can't have a smaller car because of that.

We own one of each, but they get about the same gas mileage. I'd really like a hybrid, but I don't think they have quite evolved enough yet for me to part with that much money, when the cars we have run just fine and still look good. Now that we are retired we don't drive that much except on 2 or 3 annual trips. Sometimes we rent a car for vacation anyway, as that is a good way to really test drive vehicles and know which ones we would buy if anything happened to our existing cars. In fact that is how we decide to buy our van. We had reserved a sub-compact for vacation travel and the rental agency ran out of small cars and had to substitute the van (for the same price !)--we loved it and ended up buying an identical one used from another rental agency when we got home.

I have a small car, but I don't really drive that much, either, since they cut back on my extra hours at work. Also, they are having me work closer to where I live, too. I've thought about renting a car to have an extended test drive, too. I may do that next time.

I used to be able to do my own work on my car, too. I used to have a very old car that needed constant fixing. But, I am not allowed to do any work on my car where I live, so I have to take it in. I do simple things that don't leave a mess, but anything else has to be taken off the property. And, I can't do it in the street either or I'll get a ticket.

My family owns an extended Chevy van because we have three kids and we have always hauled around not only them but a lot of their friends as well. If we could change the van we probably would buy a small car for my husband to drive to work, because it is a 45 mile drive, and keep the van for leisure driving.

Thanks for answering. Yeah, a lot of people need the larger cars for just that reason.

hi i dont have my own car but my parents have each a small car. they told, it is very economical in terms of guzzling gasoline. the only drawback that it can only fit 5 people including the driver each. LOL... beyond that, it's like being crammed inside a sardine can. how about your car?

My last two cars were small. I just had to give up a very small one with great gas mileage for a slightly bigger one with not as good gas mileage, but OK gas mileage. American car manufacturers just don't make those small cars anymore. The bigger car is a little safer, though. It's designed to fit 5, but I don't think it can adequately fit 5 full-grown adults in it, though.

I myself have a 4dr dodge stratus, i guess you could say it is a small car, when i first got it, gas was a little less then $3 per gallon, of course being in the southern states gas was a little cheaper why i don't know, but it is really good on gas, and i remember when gas shot up to $3.14 it wasn't to bad, because it only took about $40. I haven't filled it up since i got back to Mass yet, to be honest i think i'm affraid to see hoe muvh it will be, and it is only a little car.

I'm the same way. On the bright side, I don't pay as much in gas as a lot of people do, but I feel like it's too much for a small car.

If one day I will buy a car, mostly it will be a small car. First, our family is small and we don't have to use the large car all the time. Second, big car uses more gasoline and it's quite expensive today. Third, big cars are too difficult to find a place to park in the crowded city.

One of the reasons why I wanted a smaller car is the ease of parking it. If I didn't drive that much in the city and I had my own garage or parking space, then I probably wouldn't mind a bigger car.

I have a small car. But the feauture in it are more. And so the price is also more. I am going to sell this car. And get a big one. With less feautures in it.

Yeah, I like my car with few features on it because I like to keep it forever and those things are expensive when they break down.

Thanks for responding. Where I live, the cost of diesel is so much higher than gas. It used to be that diesel had the best mileage, but now a lot of gasoline cars have almost as good mileage as diesel.

I drive an old car - a 92 Chevy Cavalier. It gets decent mileage - about 26 mph in the city and 30 on the highway. Hubby drives a small car - Ford Focus. It gets more than the EPA said it would get. Good thing. He drives about 35 miles each way to work - in traffic.

Yeah, I just bought a car that gets slightly more than what the dealer said it would get when I bought it. But, that's because I tend to maintain my car more than the average car owner.

I own a large SUV. I would not change it for anything. I did not buy it. It was given to me by a friend.

An electric car would be nice, but I don't have a place to plug one in where I live. Also, you still have to pay for the electricity, which can also be expensive.

i own a fuel efficient and safe honda accord. So it's the best of both worlds. I think the new Honda Civic was given the highest rating in gas efficiency so Honda are good for that. Also last year I was rear ended at a stop light in my Honda. It barely put a scatch on it but almost totaled her mazda. So they are safe to. (What a crazy girl--shut the cellphone up and look)
