I just changed stored where I work. The new store had 2 stray pups show up about a week before I did,
They are people shy and very skiddish. One, Sandy, will not get with in 20 feet of anyone. The other one, Buddy, shown in the photo, will come nearer, but runs at any movement.
A customer bought a bag of food for them. We have been giving them food and water, while we try to get someone that can come get them. The town has no kind of animal control to help in these situations. There have been people that would take them in, but no one can get near them
I have been working very hard to get Buddy use to me. She will now come with in 2 feet of me if I sit quietly and jhve food. One day she even came up and sniffed my hand and knee. Yesterday she smelled of my feet. (no, I am not a dog whisperer, I have been giving her bits of Vienna sausages! LOL)
The sheriff has warned 2 of the other girls that he will take action if he starts getting complaints, then that he was getting complaints.
My question to you, oh wise mylotters is this...
What would you do if you worked at this store and you were faced with the problem of these dogs?
Would you feed them?
Would you just tell the sheriff to shoot them?
PS
I will put a photo of Sandy on after I get a response!

If you have people that are willing to take them in, why don't you just try and trap them so that you can get them to these people's houses? If they have a fenced in yard or something at least then the sheriff wouldn't be on your back about threatning to get rid of them and they could eventually get used to the people that took them. I'm not sure how you would trap a dog, but i'm sure there is a way to do it. maybe look on the internet or something. i just know that it wasn't their fault they were abandoned and the sheriff shouldn't be saying he's gonna get rid of them. good luck, keep us posted and God bless

I don't know of any way to trap them. If they had Animal control and they came with those pole nooses, I am sure that would undo all the work we have put into them. they have been there over a month. I go out at least once a day and feed Buddy some Vienna sausages.
Sandy is the one i worry about the most. He/she will not even get close enough to tell if it is a boy or girl.
Here is a pic of Sandy. Sorry it isn't any better. I can't get too close.

let me think about it and see if i could come up with a way for you to get them trapped long enough to get them to a home. i would hate to see something awful happen to them because of the sheriff. i will get back to you a little later on if i come up with something. God bless

We feed them and are trying to get them where they will come near.
We are afraid for them even more now, They ventured across the road Monday. I did not work today so don't know how they are doing. I;ll have to wait until tomorrow to see them.

Hello Tammyr. I am an animal lover and I have caught many strays before. If I was in your situation I would catch the dogs and take them to where they can be cared for.
Heres the best way to catch a dog like this. Like your doing you earn its trust. I usually can catch a stray in an hour or less. I sit near to them with a bowl of food and my back twards them. This shows your not trying to be dominate over them. Of course you watch over your shoulder without letting the dog thin your staring at them. Shake the food bowl , say here boy. If he barks bark back but stay with your back facing him. Make sure you have a leash looped in a loop to catch the dog when it comes near. After a few the dog will see you are not there to harm it and will come near you. Dogs are by nature curiouse so they will eventually have to come see what you are. Loop the leash over its head and you have caught a dog.
Another thing you can try since they do come fairly close to you is to loop a leash and place it on the ground. Put a tasty treat in the middle. When the dogs goes to take the food you grab the leash and you should get the dog.
I really hope you can catch them and take them to a shelter or something like that. Good Luck!

I think after a while I might be able to get Buddy that way. Another week and I'll have her eating out of my hand.
Sandy is another story. He has NO trust in humans. He won't get close enough to even try to coax him in. He most likely will never make a good pet. He is so afraid.
I had a dog one time that was people scared. I don't know how I ever got him to come to me the first time. I guess he was so hungry he risked it. We kept him tied up because he would not come to us. He got to where he wopuld eat with me standing near, and I could pet him if I sat still near him for a long time. I had him for several months. He was very good at escaping though. One time he got lose and a local vet gave me a sleeping pill for him. It was the only way to catch him and put him back on his runner. The vet has passed away and other vets won't just give me a pill to put a dog to sleep without me bringing him in. The second time he got loose, he ran out in the road and got hit. We had to put him down, he was hurt terribly.
Thanks for the ideas though, I will try to get Buddy that way. I didn't think about looping a leash!

there are traps that trap animals without harming them. usually at a farm store. don't know if the other one will cooperate after one is trapped

I am afraid of that as well/ If I found a vet to give me a sleeping pill, Buddy would get it all. She eats her fill THEN lets Sandy have his/her turn.Even with two piles, she keeps Sandy away from both until she has finished. If we caught her, Sandy would probably not come near again even to eat. We will have to get Sandy first, because Buddy is so much more trusting.

I would do whatever I had to do to catch these dogs. I think you are on the right track. You have to earn their trust which you are well on your way to doing. Why do people have to be so mean to animals. These poor dogs don't deserve this and they certainly don't deserve to be shot.

I wish I knew! I guess they thought they would find a great home at one of the houses in town?? I would LOVE to believe they escaped someones yard, but the way they act, I wonder if their mother wasn't a stray when she had them and they have lived 'stray' all their lives.
Buddy will come around, but the other one, Sandy may never get over his fear of humans. Buddy is the Alpha of the two. She is SO sweet, even if she won't come close, she still lets me know she wantsto play with me, she is just afraid.
