I've started texting

I've developed a whole new respect for text messaging. I never have really liked to talk on the phone and yet I was adversive to text messaging also. Thinking it was a little impersonal. But I don't know how many times during a conversation, there is always those awkward pauses, where neither one really knows what else to say, but doesn't want to be rude. Text messages seem to get the point across and you can respond in your own time without being put on the spot. Which do you prefer talking or texting?

Well there is a place and time for everything and I agree that if I had an emergency I would much prefer to call.

It all depends on who I am talking to or texting. It also depends on what I have to say!
Take today for instance, when I texted my husband about one of your discussions. I never call him at work because for all I know he could be in with a patient or in a meeting with a Colonel. So, I text. He will text back as soon as he can or he will call me.
If I need to tell someone..say my sister, a big long story; I would much rather just call her! It is just easier.
I might text my ex-husband, "Happy Birthday". We are pretty friendly but I don't always want to have a big long conversation with him.
I text my dad when we are traveling just to let him know where we are. I don't call everytime we cross a state line. He will text and ask me every few hours...he worries like that. And he likes to calculate how long until we get to his house with his grandbaby!
I definitely think text has its advantages and sometimes I wish people would just text me instead of call. But I tend to close myself off from the rest of the world and I am usually happier after a good phone conversation.

Yes, the one about...3 words to describe yourself.
It was 3 days ago now. You even commented back:
"I think thats really cool that you took the time to text your husband at work to answer this post. Thank you for that. Why anxious?"

It depends, I do love to text though. Me and my friend enjoy texting each other across the room when we are with other people lol. Drives them crazy. They automatically think we are talking about them when we really aren't. Plus it makes it easier for other people so they can answer in their own time. I'm also a fast texter so in a way it's much quicker for me. Although there are people I enjoy talking to on the phone, phone's are better when you are talking to someone you haven't talked to in awhile, and are catching up with each others lives. Then there are less awkward pauses, because there is so much to talk about.

I'm becoming better at texting all the time. I've got where on the keys the alphabet is. Makes it easier.

Yeah, it does make it easier. I can text without looking at the keys or screen. However I prefer to look at the screen. Also using Word helps a lot, it forms the words for you, and you just have to hit next if it isn't the right word. Some people find it difficult though. It is so much faster though, although I can text regularly pretty fast too, but it can be more of a pain to do it that way.

LOL!! I love texts messaging!! I am the texting Queen when it comes down to it. Being a full time college student, there is a lot of times where you really need to get in touch with friends and just cant or dont have the time to call. So texts are a great source. Talking during the day can eat up minutes especially if the person you are communicating with is not on the same network as you are. I love texting so much that i have unlimited on my wireless plan. And you are right it gets the point across directly. I love it

I think texting is becoming more popular than calling, but it makes sense to me.

Talking unless I'm already on the phone and I need to get a quick message to somebody.
But sometimes I goof around with it. Like we're in a restaurant and I text my husband who is just on the other side of the table. Or I send him a text message from his own phone. Then when he responds to the message he gets another message. hehe

Thats so cute. Sounds like you and your husband have alot of fun together. Does he not realize at the time what you are doing in the restaurant?

I prefer calling rather than text messaging. I tend to forgot the things that I want to text because my fingers can't cope with the thoughts running through my head. But I do text all the time since text messaging is much much cheaper than calling. Another thing is that text messaging is far more exercised here in the Philippines. It's a way of life here. Text messaging here is so popular that it is not only used for emergency purposes but greetings to forwarded messages.

Why is it so common for people to text versus call in your country?
@i_invest1124 (41)

Because text messaging is cheaper than calls. It also gives a person the freedom to choose to reply or not especially if you are busy. Another thing, we are used to talking to someone in long hours, sometimes it takes like an hour or more.

Hi there, I agree that doing text messaging is more relaxing and convenient as there is no time limit and I could type out my opinion and feeling in my own sweet time. However I prefer to talk to the person if there is anything urgent and both parties can have instant communication. If doing text messaging we wouldn’t have such advantage.

I agree that I too would prefer to call if there is an urgent situation, otherwise texting is more convenient for both parties.

Well, our country is the texting capital of the world. But basically, if you ask me, it would always depend on the situation. Usually when its very important or very urgent, then I call, but in some cases that what I wanted can wait then I will just have to text. The point is, in our country, call charges are very expensive, so it would be wiser to text instead of calling.

It depends. Usually when I just need to say few words that are covered by one short text message, it would be enough to only use the text messaging. However, if I feel that typing would be longer than speaking right on the phone, I would call the person right away and get my words directly to the person by talking.

If the person I'm communicating with has something urgent to say or vice versa, I always prefer spontaneity. I'm a bit impatient with typing through a cellphone keypad, that's another thing. I would rather call or be called. But if the message is impersonal, sometimes, I don't even respond to it.

I used to get impatient with texting also, finding it rather cumbersome. But as time has progressed I find that I'm much more proficient.

i never really liked talking on a cellphone too. i dont even use the home telephone at all. for me and my siblings we mostly text family and friends. we arent on a 'plan' payment so we buy out credits for the phone every month or whenever it runs out. when we call people cellphone-cellphone it would cost a lot per minute. around 6.50 pesos a min. if you have the same phone service and it cost more if the person you are calling has a different phone service which is expensive considering that you just have to tell them something in a short while. so why not text right? its much cheaper. its just 1 pesos and the message would still be saved in the inbox in case they need to be reminded, unlike a phone call.

I know its stupid, but I never even thought about the cost of texting versus the cost of calling until recently and then I had this moment when I said to myself "DUH!"

I prefer talking. Seeing as my cellphone plan doesn't give me free texting, and I get charged whenever I send/receive one, I would MUCH prefer just calling, it is much more personal, and I decide how long I the discussion continues. Not to mention that texting can be very tedious for beginners, just getting used to the system can take a while. Not to mention talking is much faster and cheaper if you plan to have a long discussion.

I really don't like talking on the phone that much. Its kind of boring to me. I guess I don't have enough to say. Now give me a computer screen and I can go on forever.

Texting definately. I find it quite tedious to talk on the phone sometimes, especially when I am busy, it is worse if my Mum phones as she is on the phone for at least an hour to 2 hours and then time has gone and I get nothing done, and half the time she only phones to tell me one thing!! At least with texting I can just talk when I want to and say the one thing that I want to say!!
Plus texting is cheaper, I get 300 free texts a month every month and that is plenty for me, if I used my mobile to call I would be bankrupt as each phone call would be 2 hours long.

I definitely agree with you on the cheaper end of things. I hate having my hand tied up with a phone. You can text and be done with it.

I must admit that personally I prefer to talk because I just can't text fast enough and I get a little frustrated as I want to type out all the words in full and I don't really like using the shortcuts! LOL what an old fashioned biddy I am!
I used to like texting too when I was in London as everyone was doing it but it doesn't happen here or in Spain very much.
Texting is good when you don't particularly want to talk to someone but you need a question answered - I must admit I did that yesterday :)
Thanks for sharing this with us KB.

I never liked texting until recently. I guess I found it kind of cumbersome also, but now I realize that why wouldn't I prefer to text, when I absolutely hate talking at length on the phone?

I love texting as it is quick and a good way of staying in touch with people whom you'd struggle to talk to on the phone. I only talk to a handful of people on the phone now and use texts far more often. I think I prefer texting.

philippines is said to be number one when it comes to texting. most people here still prefer texting rather than talking. that maybe the reason all network, the mobile companies here offer a great drop down prices of their services, especially the sms service. but talking is still best for emergency cases because most often, sms messages come late. sometimes, it takes a another day before the message will be sent or delivered...

Well of course I would make a phone call if the situation warranted, but it seems easier for everyone just to text when they have the time.
