Oops - So It IS For OIL?

Does anyone know who made this statement this afternoon at a town hall meeting? Here it is: "My friends I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will – that will then prevent us – that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East.” If you said Senator John McCain, you're correct. For the whole story, go here: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/02/975609.aspx Of course, as has become almost expected from the formerly straight-talking, non-wavering "maverick", he soon tried to back down from that very clear statement. Oops, I meant the first Gulf War - NO, I didn't mean that at all... If you read this article in its entirety you'll also see, as has definitely come to be expected, the press made it as easy as possible for him to try to wiggle out of this latest gaffe. Do you think he succeeded? Or is the poor old fart once again being taken out of context? Annie

First of all, The neon-con candidate and "Lets' Go to War" buddies of his have made it absolutely clear that we will be in the Middle East for the next 100 years. Keeping the gas companies in massive profits. The much malign Michel Moore and his 9/11 movie has proven to be true. It's a shame that we get more accurate new from the Daily Show then we do from Public Broadcasting. Ron Paul said the exact same thing (omit the quote about the black community and HIV).And we don't hear any fervor over that

Great response. I know I'll really get it here but I don't understand why so many people love to attack Michael Moore. I agree with you totally about the Daily Show, too. Annie

Annie, On your article; why didn't you include the third or fourth or fifth paragraphs in your post since you obviously can copy and paste? You know, the ones where McCain clarifies what he said to be about the FIRST gulf war in particular. Next: For anyone to say that ANY war or conflict we fight in the gulf region isn't a little bit about oil is ludicrous. As long as we are dependant on gulf region oil we will have an urgent interest in the welfare of that oil. The problem with being dependant on that oil is that we don't have to be! I don't know where you got your information about the Alaskan oil reserves but it is totally bogus. If we can get past the spotted owls and caribou this country could end its dependency on foriegn oil. Also, the oil companies have been decieving us about our domestic oil here in the lower 48. There is enough oil reserves here in the 48 continuous states to last for generations! The reason the oil companies don't pump it is because thay can hide more profit in the imported oil. I do agree with you on one thing though; I believe it is imperative for us as a nation to explore and develop new sources of energy. This is being fought against by the oil producers with a vengance but I believe that in the end, even they will see the desperate need to do this. I believe the research into separating the hydrogen from water for energy is our best and safest bet. After all, the earth is 75% water.

I'm sorry, I didn't omit any particular part of the article I linked to out of any personal "agenda", I was trying to include the highlights and show where you could get the rest of the article so as not to make it too long for some members' tastes. I see now I probably should have included the entire article because McCain later said that he didn't mean the earlier Gulf War either, I guess he didn't mean what he said at all, PERIOD. That's pretty much par for the course with McCain these days. He said he'd consider demolishing the lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans then he said he didn't remember saying that. He said he'd have taken Air Force One straight to New Orleans after Katrina hit but when it happened he was with Bush in Arizona celebrating HIS birthday. "I don't know where you got your information about the Alaskan oil reserves but it is totally bogus. If we can get past the spotted owls and caribou this country could end its dependency on foriegn oil." I got this information from a number of sources, including just today from member of the Bush Administration according to CNN. I don't know which information is right but it's clear somebody is wrong. Annie
