Is Mumps serious disease?

Is Mumps serious disease? What is the best thing to do if your child has mumps? Anyone there who experience it with your children, How did you cope with it?

Isn't mumps one of things that is best to get when you are a kid to get it over and done with as if you get it when you are older then it is serious, maybe i am getting that mixed up with something else but I thought mumps was...you can tell I never had kids...
