Bit means 0s and ones.More the bit, more operation the processor can perform.64 bit means the processor ca process 64 bit of information at a time.

32 bit operating systems are for 32bit processors, you can not use 64bit operating systems with 32bit processor. 64bit operating systems are for 64 bit processors, you can also use 32bit operating systems with 64bit processors. The operating system will run fast if you use 64bit but one disadvantage is you will not get all the softwares for 64 bit, you will get support for most softwares not all. If you have 64bit processor it is better to use 64bit operating system.

when you are using a 32 bit os with a 32 bit processor then it means that at one time 32 bit information is being processed through the processor. and when you have a 64 bit processor then you have actually doubled the processing power. and this is can only be done if ur os also understand that u have a 64 bit processor. and that is why u alsoi need a 64 bit operating system to utilise the full potential of 64 bit processor.

32bit OS are for 32bit hardwares as 64bit OS are for 64bit hardwares. 32bit OS will run on a 64bit hardware but not the other way around. For simplicity XP is 32bit and Vista is 64bit, although both have their 64bit and 32bit version respectively. The bits here pertain to the size of memory address, data/info size, transfer buses. Meaning a 64bit can hold twice the size than a 32bit. This is analogous to 64 pieces of information can be process at one particular time as compared to 32 pieces of information. This in mind the obvious benefit is speed.
