How long until Crisco goes bad?

I made a pound cake the other day and did the grease and sugar thing. However, the crisco I had in my pantry was pretty old. How, old you ask? I truly can't remember purchasing it. Anyway, the pound cake tasted like the crisco. Needless to say, I threw it out. But, wonder, how long will crisco last in the pantry?

I"ve wondered this myself. I used to bake cookies so often it never had a chance to "go bad" so I never thought about it, but now, I don't bake as often and used it the other day to make frosting..tasted okay, but still - since christmas in the pantry partially used...just wondered!

What was left in this can probably would have been fine to melt and fry up some potatoes or something. I just tasted in in my pound cake. But, my boyfriend, ate it all up and didn't say anything. He didn't get sick, so it must have "passed". Today I made a two layer, round chocolate cake and used my spray canola oil and sugar. It is really good! I used to buy the crisco all the time, regular and butter flavor. I should have bought more to make the frosting for my chocolate cake, but resorted to the canned stuff. Vanilla in the middle and chocolate fudge on the outside. Yumm-O !

I don't know how long until Crisco goes bad but I thought it should have an expiration date on it somewhere.

Thanks, I didn't bother to look for an expiration date prior to throwing it away, but you are right. I didn't realize until the cake was already baked and I ate a piece that it did not taste quite right. Then I was reminded of it for a few hours after as well! Have a good day!

There should be an expiration date or lot number on the can - you can call crisco and they should be able to tell you based on the lot number how old it is and if it's still any good. I didn't think crisco really went bad...but I guess it is 2 years or so according to their website: http://www.crisco.com/About_Crisco/faqs.aspx They go in great detail about it, so you must not be the first person to wonder this!!

As I think about it, quite possibly, could be even more than two years. I'll dig it out of the trash and look for an expiration date. I'm on my way to the grocery to get more - a smaller can this time :) Thanks for responding!
